Online World: Mixed Bag

So, it's been awhile since I've populated message boards and online communities with a shipper's zeal supporting a favorite couple.  I had forgotten the joy of reading spoilers in favor of my couple or meeting lots and lots of people who suffer the same affliction of shipping said couple.  I'm not alone!  There are other people who like them!  Of ( Read more... )

Well I'm American and I love her (though Matthew is my favorite.) I think what was a good idea, if not a little too over the top, was the Pamuk thing. I would have been interested in seeing if Mary could have fallen in love with Matthew without the Pamuk situation obviously changing her to some degree, but many people wouldn't have had the patience or interest in it, I'm sure. I got my friend into the show, and while she was glad to see some solace in Mary after the Duke thing, it was Pamuk which helped her root for Mary somewhat as her own character and not just because I was telling her too. :D

I also think what hurts is the show didn't really give us a lot of reasons why Mary would think they could fight the entail. When Sir Robert said, "We can't fight it, and that's that," Mary trying to argue with him may have come across as more spoiled then simply trying to understand WHY. It's another moment I think is important to their relationship, Matthew does take the time to explain to Mary why it's impossible. Nobody else bothered (probably because she was a woman and felt she wouldn't really understand).

But you are right on the Internet being a place to hate. Ships aside, I've always been surprised how people immediately reject new characters on long running shows. Now this is before there is any threat to ships or anything. It's just, people have their favorites and if someone comes along to take screen time, THEY MUST DIE (and it scarily is very similar to that).

Yea, I rarely read the IMDB board. They usually are always negative.

Yeah, I agree about Pamuk. He wasn't necessary for her to fall for Matthew, but he did help speed things up and helped A LOT with making people like Mary more. I liked her already, but I know from what I've read there are a lot of people who only really liked her after that - though some use the Pamuk thing as a further reason to dislike her - that she did "take a lover."

But yeah, it's amazing what people can hate on isn't it. I mean I'm not exactly being very nice towards Miss Lavinia Swire, but I can't say I hate her - not yet anyway!

I liked Mary too before Pamuk, I thought the Duke talking her into going into the servants quarters was meant to show the difference someone truly bad and someone who isn't.

As for people disliking her because she took a lover, wow. I hadn't thought that being a reason to dislike her. That scene was a very heavy pressured scene. Up until then, Mary felt herself more sophisticated than she was, so reluctantly went for it, but I always thought if Mary had been given some time to actually think about it, she would have realized it was a foolish thing to do. I can really relate to spontaneous whims turning out to be major mistakes because that's how life is and I do think it's very important for Mary to learn that lesson. I think it would help her take a step back from life and look at it again, which is what I wrote on my grave FF where Matthew meets Mary at Patrick's grave.

I don't hate Lavinia because she is obviously made to have nothing for us to hate. I did read where the actress said she saw posts online stating they hated her already. LOL. I really would have thought that would have gone more towards Sir Richard.
