Nice little story. I think the feeling of growing older and more distant from your old war buddies is more profoundly felt than just loneliness, but the two feelings are rather intertwined to begin with. The last line does make me think, though I do have to wonder if I'm missing something because I'm not as familiar with the series.

Yes, you are missing something. The scene that the drabble takes place during is a direct counterpart to a shot that took place 4 seasons before. You'd get exactly what kind of loneliness it's about if you knew what the context is for that previous scene.
