Well, I...called my mom, to see if my symptoms sounded like anything to her. She said it sounded like GERD--possible, sure--and asked about my weight. I hadn't really been weighing myself a lot, so I sort of hedged around an answer--said I hadn't really lost anything or gained anything lately--and she suggested I look into stomach banding ( Read more... )

Could be GERD, stomach banding wouldn't help. (In fact, would probably make it worse.)

Might also be plain old fashioned heartburn. Gaviscon works for me, pretty well. Also not eating for at least an hour (and better two) before lying down to sleep, and cut back on any foods which you notice make it worse. (Carbonated beverages help some folks, bother others, so it's really an individual kind of thing.)

If you want ammunition to use on your mom against bariatric surgery of any kind, check out junkfoodscience.blogspot.com I don't always agree with her (especially not on single payer healthcare) but she's got some valid points about weight and weight loss.

No, you're not nuts and no, you don't need surgery now -- goodness, there are other ways to lose weight if and when you're ready for it --

Do check with the doctor -- it could be a bronchial infection, it could be heart-related (a type of angina) -- it could be GERD or even diabetes -- there are so many things that can cause symptoms like that -- even a bad tooth --

Dear God, you'd think your mom was my old boss or something. He was a MASTER at solving the wrong problem: you come to him with one problem, and somehow it morphs into another problem, and then he solves that one. This, of course, leaves the original problem unfixed, so it sits around and keeps annoying you.

I think your mom needs a hobby. Laura's Weight does not count as a hobby :P
