So it's been a while since I've posted here; a lotta changes have happened in my life and the short version is I stopped, and after 2 years, have finally managed to get my life in order and start training again. Right now, I'm only running (although I'm not sure what pedalling my tank of a bike 5 miles to and from work counts as) and I've got an ( Read more... )

The whole foot strike thing is something of particular interest to me having just read Born To Run (Christopher McDougall). Once I can run again, I'm so trying it barefoot. The intent - if not the specific - might help you visualize a more midfoot strike: think of running over sharp gravel barefoot. You'll immediately stop either heel strike or flat footed.

Yes to the cravings. I'm not a vegetarian but don't eat much red meat. And sometimes the only thing that will do is a rare steak. Some of us need more protein than others. I function much better on a higher protein lower carb diet. I've also discovered, if you go the protein powder route, they are not all created equal. And you'll KNOW when you're feeding yourself quality protein. You'll feel energized and the cravings go away.

if what you're craving is red meat and you know you get enough protein, consider that you might need more iron in your diet- esp. if you're female.

Thanks for reminding me...I'd completely forgotten about iron--I always figured that as long as I wasn't feeling tired all the time I was okay...

agree with the need for iron. adding more dark green leafy veggies along with a boost in the variety of legumes, might help these cravings. you can also talk to your doctor about possible iron supplements, although those (i've heard from friends who are anemic) tend to be really harsh on your system. also, and i'm sure you know this, but you need to combine your beans with whole grains (like brown rice and the like) to create a complete protein. your body does need both in order to make up for the lack of protein you would normally get from animal meat.

hmm yes i would also agree about thinking about iron. have you had a look at how much protien you are getting per day? i am vegan and in a nutrition class we had to analyse our weeky diets and add up the amounts of different nutrients we each were getting, i got an average of 50g of protein a day (thats including a 25g protein shake) whereas the other meat eating guys ate over 200g of protein a day. I've heard things like 'if you eat enough food you eat enough protein' but for me thats not true. (for my weight i should eat more like 60-90g).
