Firefly: Family Trees and Bending

Firefly: the late, great, tragically cancelled Space Western. If you know it, you almost certainly love it (or you’re a Reaver.) If you don’t know it, you really, really, seriously should.

Here are some thoughts I’ve been having about it.

Because both have elemental powers, it's easy to assume that the Books of Bayern is in the same universe as Avatar. It probably came before because there are only a couple of benders, although there's a chance it came after because in Goose Girl, Isi's aunt/babysitter told her there was a time long ago when everyone could talk to everything. Anyway, I bring this up to point out there are other types of bending/speaking than just the elements. Rinna can tree speak, which is probably a variation on water bending like the swamp benders. AU=Bayern deals with the issue of Inara and Saffron being nonbenders. They're probably just people-speakers, which do in fact exist in the AU with Azula and probably Iroh. They are not less powerful just because they don't have traditional bending.
