things i want to remember/get out of my head. lists! i likes 'em.
  1. new layout is mostly working for me apart from the fact that the sidebar modules are inextricably linked with the font size for their alignment. 10pt is too hard on my eyes, but the vertical layout goes wonky with 9pt. feh. the profile module also appears to be necessary, otherwise the sidebar overlays the navbar at the top. must learn CSS.
  2. the time has come (the walrus said) to make better use of the tag feature, now that dw allows nested tagging. this requires thought. not sure how i'll manage.
  3. apparently the proper mix of chemicals in my brain equals long, running monologues in my head. no one mentioned that side effect.
  4. from
metafandom, an interesting discussion of horror/romance tropes and dollhouse, featuring drifts into P&P and BSG. abrakadabrah said, in reference to dollhouse, the whole show feels postmodernist to me. i said:

sorry to butt in, but this comment interested me. considering that lyotard's definition of postmodern is incredulity of metanarratives, and fairy/folk tales are some of the oldest metanarratives around, i'm not sure how a show that is consciously enacting fairytale tropes can be considered postmodern.

unless its use of those tropes is parodic in that it's inhabiting as well as critiquing them. which i'd be very surprised to see argued about dollhouse, given its sort of self-conscious ponderousness.

the OP said, Because, you know, Darcy treats Elizabeth horribly because he loves her! i said:
actually, he's horrible to everyone in meryton just because he's a snobby arse. by his standards he offers elizabeth a great deal of special attention and consideration. once he sees his actions through her eyes, he does his best to make amends. similarly, when she sees his actions through his eyes, she realises how her own prejudices have blinded &etc. amelioration through context, as it were. but they both, in the end, change for the better.

people who object to the novel because of darcy's behaviour seem to miss out on the fact that austen is critiquing elizabeth's behaviour just as much.

which, IMHO is rather a different scenario than kara/sam and kara/lee. even so, your point that "men's assholery in relationships is tolerated and considered part of what they do, but the second a woman does it? The guy better dump her, that wimp!" is sadly accurate.

i also want to talk about this in regards to house/cuddy at some point.
  5. that P&P fic i've been mocking has, alas, come to an end. i am simply not capable of capturing the sheer WTFery of the whole thing, but i feel that the following passage is demonstrative:
A deep “Grrrrrr!” emanated from deep within Charles Bingley as he guided his wife onto his maleness and thus began a wild jungle dance, their third - or was it the fourth? - of the morning.
