As much as I hate Facebook (which is really a lot), I wish that LJ had a "like" button that I could click. So when I scroll past posts updating about beautiful babies or end-of-chemo treatments or new jobs or "here are some photos of things I love!", I could click the "like" button ( Read more... )

That would be very useful, it's my favourite aspect of Facebook.

I like the easy picture-uploading. But that's about it, really--and that's not easy all the time, either.

I completely understand that feeling of inadequacy, when you don't feel like you have anything to say, or to add, or what thinking (if you can even figure out what you're thinking!) But... I don't know, I think even if you take the time to type, "I like this post," it says more than clicking a "like" button. (Not to put down the "like" button, because I think it is a nice option for Facebook.) As long as "I like this post" isn't the only comment you ever make on LJ, I think it's still meaningful. People understand that sometimes we struggle to say things, but we're still trying.

And this? --> "I don't have anything specific to say, or what I would say has already been said ten times, but I read your post, and it made me very happy, and I just want you to know that you have brightened my day, so thank you." Would be a fantastic comment.

I agree: it would be a fantastic comment.

When I don't know what to say, but I want to let it be known that I read the post, I comment with a *hugs* or ♥ or Hi or something brief. Just so people know they're not typing into some big, black, anonymous void.

donutsweeper pointed out somewhere where these types of comments would be useful--for fics! You like to know that people are reading your fics, and sure, it'd be nice if everybody who read it left a long, thoughtful, detailed review. But as a reader, you know that you've read things that you liked, but you couldn't think of anything to say about them. A "like" button would let the author know that you read it, you liked it--thus serving the same function as a "I liked this fic!" comment that people tend to leave lots of. And people who wanted to could still leave long analytical comments.

For things that need more thought--sometimes it's a time issue. Sometimes it's a "need time to think of what to say" and-then-forgot-to-go-back-to-it issue. Sometimes I think my mind just wants to hide under the bed permanently and not deal with anything requiring thought ever again.

that would be especially great for fanfic, when the story was fine, but I don't really have anything to say about it and I don't really want to leave one of those 'lol' or '♥ this' comments.

Yes, this. It would be PERFECT for those types of comments.
