For those of you two transitioned while on the job, at what stage in your transition did you inform your employer and, in hind sight, how did that go for you? Did it work for you or do you wish you would have done it earlier or later?
I'm not out, yet, but I have had a friend who had her name tag altered on the job to a name that was feminine but spelled in such a way as to make it appear gender neutral. It was neither her birth name nor her chosen name, and most people hired don't know her by any other. That seems like a solid starting point and doesn't jeopardize your chances of being told "no" on the spot by a wary employer with an obviously sexed new name at an early or "mid" point in transition, or similar situation, for a place without protection of trans* rights. I think I will eventually do the same.

I am a management consultant in the UK, largely working in the public sector.
