I'm the first person to transition at my school. So it's often kind of like pathfinding sometimes. Anyways the current problem im looking for help with is the bathroom issue. Ive gone full time recently, have been on hormones for about 8 months, and almost everyone calls me by my female name these days, or rather a cute little shortened form, ( Read more... )

Unfortunately I don't have any advice, but did they even consider how the guys would feel with a woman using their restroom?

They probably did, and had happy thoughts of how the "weirdo" might just as well haul off and shoot itself. Morons...

first off, find out what the local access laws are for your area. I know here, if you present as female you are legally allowed access to the female wash/changeroom REGARDLESS of your legal sex, or ID.

I would suggest talking to a local GLBT organization and see if they know of a trans-friendly lawyer who could look this up for you.

If that doesnt work in your favor, point out the extreme personal danger to your principal. A person shouldn't have to risk assult or rape to go for a pee.

Yeah, but it would appear you live in Canada, which is a lot better than the US, particularily the South. :\

OP, don't drive to the gas station; you shouldn't have to. Tell them you're a woman, you live as a woman, and you should be able to use the women's restroom. If other people are uncomfortable, they should change what they do, not force you to.

This isn't true. There are actually three states that do not allow gender changes on documentation (Ohio, Idaho, and Tennessee). Our state is the only one that has an explicit statute banning this. Currently, we activists in this state are lobbying to change that law, but thus far, we've made little to no headway in the matter.

a little OT: so you can change your driver's lisence, but not your BC in Tennesee? well, bollocks :( my gf was born in TN.

I would suggest talking to them about designating one women's room or single stall bathroom that you can use, that way those women on campus who are uncomfortable can use the other women's rooms. My admin originally was unsure about how to handle the bathroom issue and that is how we do it now. If nobody is in one of the other bathrooms and I really have to go I might duck in, but otherwise I just use the one bathroom.
