At the Mountains of Madness -- "Nightmare King Plot" - Final Post

This is the Final Plot Plan for Nightmare Plot. Helper Mods, please sign up here for what parts you can help out with and we'll edit them in. It's recommended that you help with parts you have a character in, so you don't have to split your focus.

It should be noted that we have no solid plans for each individual part--this is the sort of thing where players use their characters' fears to create their own drama. It will be the mods' jobs just to help them organize it and to pick the groups they're in, so it's not chaotic.

That means that for the big parts in Stage 3 and on, your characters will have the freedom to react as they will react and you don't have to wait for the mods to npc anything--though we'll help where we can. Every player will be able to push the plot forward with their characters' actions. Only the group trying to kill/banish the Nightmare King will have a set end goal--which is killing/banishing the Nightmare King.

The dreams start to cause injuries that appear in the real world and it gets harder and harder to wake people up.

1. Beyond the Wall of Sleep
Crewmates sleepwalk into dangerous places. Eventually, there are brief bits where they literally walk into a daydream and reality starts too bend around them. They experience a life they possibly could have had that is miserable. Note: These wouldn't be brainbreaking, despair-ridden dreams, they'd be much more subtle. A brilliant scientist might be an understimulated and miserable office drone married to a nagging, cheating spouse, a werewolf might have had a crappy pack that picks on them constantly. Save the really traumatic stuff for the plot's endstage.

2. From Beyond
People start to see ghosts of what may be dead former crew members, and ghosts of some of those that died in the Pod Caverns. There is poltergeist activity focused around the children. People see apparitions of dead loved ones disappearing around corners, or loved ones they aren't sure were saved (think Event Horizon). Whether these are really those lost souls, or just illusions is hard to tell. Either way, those that are part-ghost or have supernatural powers will have a helluva workout. The upside is the presence of the ghosts might disrupt the Waking Dreams to allow people to escape them more easily. These dreams will start to cause real-world injuries.

3. The Last Test
There is a traitor in your midst, meatship. A crew member is working on behalf of the Nightmare King in secret, for reasons as yet unknown. This person has access to all the Nightmare King knows about your characters and there's plenty NK can glean from their dreams. They'll be doing minor things to disturb characters and throw them off balance, bringing their worst fears to the forefront, to prepare them all for their lord and master.

4. The Dead Bookworm
One intrepid group of researchers can find out the circumstances under which the Stone in Escherville was found, given at least a little more context on its origins and why it was taken onto the ship.

STAGE 3

Endstage. The Nightmare King gets partially free. Nightmares become reality. Together, they will all have to work together to survive their worst fears and nightmares--but while things could potentially kill them, the greatest thing at stake isn't their lives--it's their sanity.

Powers: All powers other than magic will get dampened. The characters won't have lost them, but the Nightmare King will have tweaked their subconscious's to make them almost "forget" how to use them. Everyone will have the barest minimum of strength and the like for their species, and those that are from particularly strong or powerful species' will be reduced to near-baseline-human levels of strength and intelligence. Exceptions are only those with altered physiology like tail blades, but everyone, them included, will feel tired, weak, and like their will is being sapped.

Powerful items like Green Lantern rings will not work. Some standard weaponry will, but in these dreamworlds, they'll have to scavenge for weaponry based on the settings. Keep in mind, they have very little power over their surroundings, so they can't just will up an AK-47. They're going to have to improvise. Expect some of them whacking nightmare creatures with sticks. Power suits also will not work. The only exception is characters that ARE power suits. They'll be able to still function and move on their own but lack all powers other than rudimentary shifting of their forms.

Magic will work. It kinda goes hand in hand with the stuff of the plot. Although certain things just won't be possible with it due to the overwhelming power of the Nightmare King. So that magic will be weak.

Groups: For the Team Facing the Nightmare King, there will be a larger group that divides into smaller ones as it goes. See that section to see those groups.

For the main event--people getting free from their nightmares, they will be arranged in groups of five, with one hardy character as the leader. This plot is actually meant to promote IC teamwork (something we all know they need to work on, lol) so leader character players will be given little tips and hints to help them keep their team alive and uncrazy. Note: This is a plot that can have severe IC consequences. We will try not to railroad, but if characters don't cooperate, they could get beaned by ICA = ICC. Hard. They could even die or go permanently crazy.

2. The Lurking Fear
The Main Event. Each individual will start out in their own personal nightmare bubble, an area around them that's the setting for their personal nightmare--but others can pull them out of it. They'll have to rescue each other, keep each other alive--and more importantly, keep each other sane.

Leaders will be those that are particularly good at slamming their nightmares in the face and carryin' on (and whose players have requested OOCly for a cool part). These are not formal teams, however, and each group will just be helping each other and clustered together.

3. The Challenge From Beyond
This is Team Badass. Team Badass will be one particular cluster of characters that gathers together after breaking free from their nightmares and heads for the Nightmare King's HQ. It will be largely comprised of psychologically hardy badass norms, Magical People (particularly those that have been working on the whole thing), Supernatural people, Divine people, and Psychics (expect nosebleeds). They'll break free of their nightmares like the others in "The Lurking Fear", organized into these temporary teams. The "Temporary Teams" they start as are the groups they're in as they break free from their nightmares. As they meet with the others, they'll split into the more formal teams in the next section.

4. The Slaying of the Monster
High-energy magic people. Magical girls, half-ghosts and the like that have more destructive/elemental magic powers will be needed outside the Cathedral, to hold off Lovecraftian horror-beasts and buy the folks inside some time.

5. Through the Gates of the Silver Key
Badass Norms. The monsters inside the Cathedral are largely unaffected by psychic powers or magic, so the badass norms will have to just keep them back as best as they can and then hold them off while the psychics and whatnot go into the main room.

6. The Whisperer in Darkness
Psychics, Divine People, and Magical People with Binding Powers. The Seer will lead everyone into the inner chamber. Those with divine blood, like gods and demigods, will need to give some as part of the sealing ritual, and psychics and mystics will have to battle the Nigthmare King on the astral plane as part of the ritual. Expect major mind-borking, mystical after effects (like cursed wounds and blindness) and possible strokes if you volunteer for this, thought they all would recover with time. Epic stuff, though, and your character will be battling a veritable god.

7.In the Vault
Saving the Avatar. Elsewhere in the Cathedral is the young man that's been trying to hold back the Nightmare King. The sigils that go from the floor in the main hall to his prison will keep him connected to the Nightmare King as he's banished, either killing him or causing him to go insane. But he can't be released, because even with the stone cracked, he's still holding NK in what's left of his prison. This group will have to fight their way to him and have to find a way to keep the crazy-making or death from happening. (Please note: This is a part for Sokka and Zuko to shine and just have a canon-ey thing with their castmate. While they will likely need backup getting there, keep in mind your character would get more of a supporting role in this part if they helped out. It's recommended if you toss your character into this part that you only do so if it's someone that'd ICly want to back them up because they're friends, or you just OOCly don't mind Sokka and Zuko stealin' the show, 'cause the players asked for a bit they could do).

8. The Battle That Ended the Century
On Rob and Erwin's battlefield, after breaking free from their individual nightmares, the crew not going after the Nightmare King will band together for their last stand. They'll have to face nightmare creatures, zombies, T-Rexes, phantom soldiers, (Evil Billy?), and their respective fears, largely armed with archaic rifles stolen from the bodies of various dead soldiers, a handful of grenades, any weapons they scavenged along the way, and sticks.

This will be a giant clusterfucky, thread-hopping, go-crazy, all-for-fun free-for-all. Because as long as the ENTIRE PLOT isn't one, sometimes those are fun. XD Since the situation would be chaotic and full of explosions and T-Rexes, that'd probably be okay.

It will end as the Nightmare King is defeated.

Not gonna reveal what exactly will go down but Aang is going to still be a little...jacked up when he's freed, meaning that he'll be in the Avatar State and start trashing the City Level when its over, raging and putting everyone in the city (which will be most of them since that's where they'll be the dreams fade) in danger. His friends will have to get to him to calm him down--or Security will have to take him out. We have a definite ending planned for it, tho, just keep that in mind.
