Though quite the elusive figure most of the time, Brother Cargn Thane's presence among the crew has been even more scarce as of late.

At the moment, however, one would be able to come across him inside one of the sensoriums, hard at work studying the crystalline orb that was the Map. The Map floated before him, held in place by the workings of the ( Read more... )

Well, well. What had she here? Ildraniath didn't spend all that much time in the Sensoriums - it meant more time for the craft to pick through her brain, although she was sure it did so already - but today, she made an exception. For a moment she examined the layout of the room, the writing, the Map. She tried to memorize all of it, to commit it to memory. And then she stepped forward, hands folded in front of her.

"So, this is where you conduct your studies?"

Cargn looks up, regarding her quietly for a moment.

"My work on the Map, yes," he replies thoughtfully after a moment. "Most of the crew use these rooms for simple entertainment, but it is also the part of the ship where psychic energy flows most freely. Quite useful for this line of work."

"The ship likes to dip into our minds here," she murmured and glanced upward, as if she could look through the ceiling and into the heart of the massive vessel.

"...so I imagine it would flow quite well."

And then her attention turns back to the Map. "Discovered anything of interest?"

"Some," he replied, "Though it does demand a bit in return. The Map tends to reveal its secrets more easily when offered information of its own."

He looks over at the orb, which pulsed slightly at its mention.

"It seems that the Map is a small portion of the Tapestry itself, making it both map and key. Which makes its protection even more vital than before."

Would Cargn recognize the Overlord? He was a public (loud, obnoxious) figure on the ship to be sure, but there was no denying the last time their paths crossed Zetta was a book.

The demon that walked into the sensorium was very much not that.

"Oh good," he said. "I wanted to have a word with you."

(Of course, it was very hard not to recognize that voice.)

Cargn doesn't rely on physical sight, so he recognizes the Overlord quite easily.

"Yes? I suppose now is as good a time as any for such things," he replied wearily.

"You got mentioned at the last Council meeting," he said without preamble. "There's a girl who apparently has psychic powers too and wants to pitch in on the map deciphering thing. To start with, I had no idea if that'd even be possible or not."

"Oh?" he said. "I assume you mean the Eldar Witch. I know she is rather interested in the Map herself."

He leaned back in his seat and sighed.

"She can attempt if she wishes. But the Map has grown rather fond of me, I believe. It always seems to get rather anxious at the possibility of another examining it, so I'm not sure if it will be completely compliant in the attempt. It tends to be less reluctant if I am present, however."

Ah, Brother Thane. The Doctor had been wondering where he turned up to. You couldn't say this man wasn't very focused, the Doctor stepping into the sensorium with one of Stacy's edible trays in his hands. He came bearing an offering of what looked suspiciously like green chocolate -- part of the west wall, in fact, from the chocolate castle from XaXing Jamie and he had made off with and hopefully Brother Thane liked chocolate or the color green or hopefully both at once. He supposed if the Brother wanted anything different, he could try to make hot cocoa out of it, or try to mix it in with the other supplies ( ... )

Cargn looked at the offered tray curiously, picking up a piece of the chocolate.

"Greetings," he replied, sniffing the chocolate slightly. "This is...?

You'll have to excuse him. In his limited exposure to it, all the chocolate he's ever seen has been brown.

"Chocolate. Green, in fact, as you can...see..." The Doctor peered at Brother Thane's empty eye sockets. Right, not one for conventional sight. He frowned and went on, "Well, maybe not see see. Did you know some species can actually taste color? Or even smell it, given the right olfactory systems."

It was more of a rhetorical question than anything else. Right now he was just pleased to see the other man picking up the chocolate, smiling as he sat down primly right there on the floor in an organized sprawl.

"Intriguing," came Cargn's response, as he gave the chocolate a nibble. "And not too bad, either. Though I will admit I'm not normally a fan of sweets."

He preferred tart things, really.

"I'm sorry I haven't been around much to continue our work on the Map. Another issue arose that I needed to take care of."

His student peeked her head into the sensorium curiously. Far be it from her to interrupt her sensei at his work, after all. Still, he'd been at it for some time, and that was what worried her. Never mind the fact that her teacher could do psychic cartwheels around her (though lately, she'd been practicing, and even her mental "fortress" was beginning to look less benign and more protective), Miku knew the importance of rest.

Even if she did run around almost everywhere like a chicken with her head cut off, and now with those children running about wildly... well, Stacy was very rarely boring, that was for certain. When it appeared that Cargn was resting, she very quietly and neatly entered the sensorium with a pot of tea and the very large tea cup she'd bought especially for him.

Miku summoned a table beside Cargn's chair, knelt expertly beside it and placed the tray down. Wordlessly, his student handed him a cup of dark, orangish tea, which smelt faintly of citrus.

Cargn looked over at his student when she offered him the cup, gently taking it with a warm smile.

"Thank you, Miku," he said wearily. "I'm sorry I haven't had more time to speak with you, child. My time seems to be rather occupied, as of late."

"It's fine, sensei," Miku assured him. "Everyone's been busy it seems. Don't worry, though. I've been practicing my studies, I promise." It seemed a little strange that he looked almost haggard, and wasn't something Miku approved of.

"Have you made very much progress?"

Cargn took a long sip of tea before answering. He allowed himself few indulgences in life, and this was by far one of his favorites.

"Some," he said, sounding a bit more refreshed. "Though it will be a while yet before the Map will permit me to use it in its intended manner. It has a habit of being rather vague in its directions, even moreso than I do."

That last bit was said with a bit of a wry grin.
