Though quite the elusive figure most of the time, Brother Cargn Thane's presence among the crew has been even more scarce as of late.

At the moment, however, one would be able to come across him inside one of the sensoriums, hard at work studying the crystalline orb that was the Map. The Map floated before him, held in place by the workings of the ( Read more... )

Would Cargn recognize the Overlord? He was a public (loud, obnoxious) figure on the ship to be sure, but there was no denying the last time their paths crossed Zetta was a book.

The demon that walked into the sensorium was very much not that.

"Oh good," he said. "I wanted to have a word with you."

(Of course, it was very hard not to recognize that voice.)

Cargn doesn't rely on physical sight, so he recognizes the Overlord quite easily.

"Yes? I suppose now is as good a time as any for such things," he replied wearily.

"You got mentioned at the last Council meeting," he said without preamble. "There's a girl who apparently has psychic powers too and wants to pitch in on the map deciphering thing. To start with, I had no idea if that'd even be possible or not."

"Oh?" he said. "I assume you mean the Eldar Witch. I know she is rather interested in the Map herself."

He leaned back in his seat and sighed.

"She can attempt if she wishes. But the Map has grown rather fond of me, I believe. It always seems to get rather anxious at the possibility of another examining it, so I'm not sure if it will be completely compliant in the attempt. It tends to be less reluctant if I am present, however."

"So long as you think it's okay, I'd approve it," Zetta said. "I'd feel a lot better with more than one person knowing a little about this thing. Not that I'm saying you're gonna get whacked any time soon, but... hey, you might get whacked sometime soon."

"I suppose the possibility exists," Cargn replied with a small smirk. "Though I wouldn't suggest losing sleep over it. My death isn't fated for a good while yet."

Not that he assumed Zetta was concerned for anything other than practical reasons.

"Besides, the true ordeal will begin after we receive the Tapestry. No point in worrying much at the moment."

"I'd rather not leave chance any opportunities to screw up fate." He hadn't become Overlord by taking stupid risks that didn't have a huge payoff, and this risk sure didn't. "But why do you say that?"

"Because that is what the Tapestry is for," he replied coolly. "It will present the crew a choice in its destiny, given time. A choice that will have rather far reaching consequences."

"Oh." Zetta blinked rather stupidly for a moment. "Uh, did I miss that announcement? It's possible, I DO miss stuff."

Cargn chuckled slightly at that.

"You were there when the Rom elder spoke with us about the Tapestry, as I recall. She said it would allow the crew to make a choice in their own path, and she was being quite truthful in that. Such a choice will end up being rather important in determining which of the many paths Fate will choose."

"Oh, yeah, but I wasn't really paying attention at time. I've known Oracles before, I didn't think she was one. You're sure it's true?"

Zetta was a pretty shameless bigot when it came to power. Oracles were supposed to be much stronger than the elder had been.

"She was just being overly cryptic," he replied. "It's something we Seers have a penchant for. And yes, it matches up quite well with my own visions. I believe we are on the right path for now."

"Question is, are there things your visions don't cover?" And shockingly Zetta was not trying to be arrogant with that query. He'd been burned by Pram's sense of humor and alleged Oracular 'loopholes' on occasion. The girl had a sadistic streak. Like any good demon, mind!

"They are rather open to interpretation," Cargn replied coolly, "But in this I am sure. The Tapestry will provide a turning point in this crew's destiny."

"Wait, is that... literal phrasing?" Zetta said, catching on to the implications. "Because that kind of hints we won't be fighting the Ohm any more. On purpose anyway."

"No," Cargn said simply. "The Tapestry will, indirectly, at least, bring an end to the war with the Ohm. But I do not believe that is where things will truly end."
