After action [open]

Jul 05, 2010 22:01

Thrawn had gathered and reviewed every scrap of information Stacy had about the disastrous battle with the Ohm--every after-action report, every camera angle. Now, in the Sensorium, he was watching the skirmish unfold in three unsettling dimensions. It was a reconstruction, only as good as the crews' accounts and his own tactical skill. The ( Read more... )

Kyle stretched as he made his way to the sensoriums. He was still a bit sore from the battle, but he'd decided the best way to get past that was to go have a long sparring session, and then go home to Arha. If he hadn't gone out today he was sure she would have kicked him out anyway. There was only so much fussing over her she'd permit. With all this on his mind the last thing he was expecting when the doors to the Sensoriums opened was the Grand Admiral.

"Sorry, I didn't realize anyone was using this."

Thrawn paused the simulation and looked over at Kyle, waving off the apology. "How are you feeling?" he asked, not noticing or not caring how out of place the courtesy would have been had their old roles still held.

If Thrawn wanted to ignore their old roles, and the rules that went with them all the better in his opinion. At the very least it showed he was adapting to the situation. "I'm alright, but I'm still worried about the others. Some of them took a real beating."

He stepped into the Sensorium, and looked over the data Thrawn was viewing. "Reviewing all the reports I see. What do you think?"

Wedge thought it was worth working with him, and Kyle couldn't disagree with that. Still he wasn't looking forward to the man's assessment. He knew how rough the response to the Ohm had been, and just how much luck had to do with any of them still breathing right now.

"I think the crew is fortunate not to have suffered even greater casualties." As though to drive home his point, in the simulation, a building collapsed on Tycho. Thrawn shook his head. "Putting the entire crew on leave at once was not a good idea, either, though I don't know how much say Stacy would let the Captain have in the matter."

The Sensoriums just weren't ever free anymore, were they?

Still, Ben had to admit, their current configuration was pretty interesting. It might have been the tactical salon of any sufficiently technologically advanced species, a shifting, intricate display of symbols. It was clearly a battle, but it took Ben a moment to realize that it was the battle they'd just fought, and that at the center of it was an Imperial tactician whose reputation had survived 'til the destruction of the galaxy.

"Nice recreation," he noted admiringly, stepping further into the room.

"Skywalker." Thrawn acknowledged the latest generation of thorns in the Empire's side with a nod. The battlefield rotated and rewound itself, replaying a five-second stretch from a fresh angle.

"Grand Admiral," Ben returned with an easy smile, not especially surprised that Thrawn had tracked down his name. "Counting our mistakes?"

"Not as such." Thrawn shrugged slightly. "They're mostly attributable to a lack of coordination at all levels. The individual mistakes are simply symptomatic."

Arha had worked her way, carefully, slowly, to the sensoriums, pausing only when she caught sight of familiar images. The battle. She watched from the doorway, leaning heavily into it, and noted the directions and scenes. This was battle study.

She nodded at his choices, drawn into the process by her own curiosity. As much as she wished to say something, she did not dare interrupt. This was a thinking moment, the work of a mentat, yes? Arha sat and watched.

He would notice her in time and she, honestly, was grateful for the rest as she was to be able to witness this thing. It showed inner thought processes in a three dimensional way and it was fascinating.

Thrawn wasn't a Jedi, but he was perceptive, and Arha's movement at the doors of the sensoriums was not part of the elaborate dance he was choreographing. "Yes?" he asked, not looking away from his reconstruction.

"I would watch, if such sits well with you," Arha said quietly, letting her voice filter as unobtrusively as possible. "I find your process intriguing."

"If you like, Flight Officer," he replied, recognizing her voice. The simulation continued uninterrupted, crew and Ohm fighting and dying, then leaping backwards in time to fight and die once more.

Needless to say, after recent events, Gavin was itching to get his hands on his fighter for sim time. He had missed out on the entire battle due to a slight error in his own judgment though there wouldn't really have been a way around such things. Which was why the young man had to pause as he stepped in to the sensoriums while tugging his flight gloves on.

All around him the battle was raging in some form or fashion in a near cohesively orchestrated movements that left his jaw dropping. Gavin didn't even see the figure in the room watching the footage until he had found himself stepping further inside. It was a mess to say the least. One disastrous mess that left the youth with a soured expression across his face. Maybe he wasn't so mad he had missed it after all. "So this is the mess everyone has been talking about..." Darklighter spoke soft though with an even tone showing his discontent for the images before him.

At that, Thrawn turned to look at the newcomer, and one blue-black eyebrow went up in as much surprise as he ever showed. "Darklighter." Thrawn knew the man from his extensive Imperial dossier, but Tycho had given no indication he was aboard during the briefing he'd given Thrawn earlier--when Gavin was busy chasing down non-existent cake.

Even if he didn't personally know the man as well as Thrawn probably knew him, that wasn't going to stop the young pilot from being somewhat nice. After all their war was over for a new one right? New leaf, turning of the page, and so on so forth. No one had yet mentioned to him that the blue-skinned man was on the ship. His frown was a mix for the footage around them and upon the discovery. "Admiral."

Brown eyes flickered up towards something as it passed above them, smiling as he saw an X-wing though it was brief. There was just to much chaos going on to enjoy watching a good firefight. "So what's the damage? I know the squad did well per the usual, but no one will say a word about the rest of the battle."

"Surprisingly minimal. No deaths among the crew, though by all rights there should have been." Thrawn shook his head in disbelief. "That's a fluke that won't happen again."

John had heard of these sensoriums. Right away he was suspicious of them of course. While he now believed in the Ohm, and was ready to fight them that didn't mean he was going to start trusting the ship's AI. It was still worth investigating though. The training potential had him interested, and if he could find a control panel somewhere maybe he could find out exactly what the ship was doing with it. If there was anything he should be worried about he was sure he could disable it.

Standing at the entrance he frowned as he couldn't find a control, or access panel. Maybe it was inside? That might expose him though. This recon was adding risk by the minute. Well he at least should peek inside. When the door opened he didn't step inside instead he stayed just at the threshold, and stared at the scene inside. Whoever the blue skinned humanoid was John was positive that he was carrying out an analysis of the battle. Maybe somebody on this ship did know something about fighting a war.

"May I help you with something?" the blue-skinned humanoid asked, not turning from his simulation. When Thrawn said it, it sounded like composed courtesy rather than sarcasm.

"Hmmm?" Was all John managed as a reply as he was already distracted by the information from the battle. In his own way he was piecing it together. It was pretty much what he expected. As the old expression went the organization in the battle had been torn up from the floor up. "Does this have all the information from the after action reports input into it?"

"You haven't used the sensoriums before, I take it." It wasn't really a question, despite the phrasing. "The information is here." Thrawn tapped his temple with a finger. "The ship constructs a simulation by mind-reading. Disconcerting, but useful." He shrugged.

"Parts of this are interpolation. A moment." He paused and sent a thought at Stacy, and the parts of the battle that were his assumptions vanished. The entire thing was a great deal less coherent without the benefit Thrawn's expert reconstruction.
