Scars

For the past few days, Cargn had made himself more scarce around the crew than he usually did.

Not that many would notice. He rarely spent much time among the crew, instead usually spending his time busying himself with things only a few might understand the significance of.

Yet now, just as quietly as he had slipped away, he had returned. For the ( Read more... )

Ben, back in an inconspicuous plantsuit, had hoped to get in a few hours of saber practice in the Sensorium. Instead, he walked in on the Seer, Cargyn, dueling against simulated targets. Though he'd heard Cargyn talk about fighting the Ohm before, this patchwork of scars across his body made it even more evident that the man had been through the wringer.

Ben sat crosslegged by the entrance to the room, watching and waiting for Cargyn to finish.

"Yes, child?" Cargn says, not even bothering to stop fighting as he spoke. "You seem to wish something of me."

He let the child bit slide. "I was going to spar," he said, tilting his head, "but as long as you're here, I'll just wait for you to finish up. I've got some questions to ask when you're done."

Cargn considers just about everyone a child. You sort of get that right when you're nearly eight centuries old.

"If you wish, I would not be opposed to having a live opponent. Better training for the both of us."

After everything and puzzling over the things that had happened in the last few days, it was pretty obvious to Katara where she had to go next. Her dish of humble pie had been enough to keep her off her feet for a few, but with Nanashi starting their sword training and tons of new simulations Arha had programmed for her, there wasn't a doubt in her mind that Katara was going to have a full plate of hard work on her hands. But before any of that began, there was one more person Katara wanted to see personally, a person she knew that would be affected by the outcome of this battle more than anyone ( ... )

He was aware of her presence before she had even entered the room.

Prescient Psykers, after all, made it a point to be aware of everything around them. It was something of a specialty for them.

Without even breaking the rhythm of his strikes, he says, "Yes, child? Do you wish something of me?"

"I didn't want to disturb you, please carry on," Katara said. "I was just curious about the final attack on the Ohm. I wasn't there because I thought I was needed in the med bay, but I heard that the Ohm left pretty abruptly. I was wondering if you could tell me what happened then...and if you could help in constructing training programs dealing with the Ohm."

"Their true reasoning for withdrawing is beyond my knowledge, though I have my suspicions. The Ohm, though inhuman and wrathful, are extremely intelligent. Though the Chosen had put up some resistance to them, never had they been mobilized in such numbers as we had during the last battle."

"The fact that we posed any threat to them, however small, was likely a new experience for them. If I had to guess, I would say they likely wished to weigh their options rather than risk continuing their assault so that they may come to understand exactly what type of threat we pose."

He pauses, the simulation stopping for the moment.

"As for training, I have been considering the best way to go about something such as that."
