Scars

For the past few days, Cargn had made himself more scarce around the crew than he usually did.

Not that many would notice. He rarely spent much time among the crew, instead usually spending his time busying himself with things only a few might understand the significance of.

Yet now, just as quietly as he had slipped away, he had returned. For the ( Read more... )

After everything and puzzling over the things that had happened in the last few days, it was pretty obvious to Katara where she had to go next. Her dish of humble pie had been enough to keep her off her feet for a few, but with Nanashi starting their sword training and tons of new simulations Arha had programmed for her, there wasn't a doubt in her mind that Katara was going to have a full plate of hard work on her hands. But before any of that began, there was one more person Katara wanted to see personally, a person she knew that would be affected by the outcome of this battle more than anyone ( ... )

He was aware of her presence before she had even entered the room.

Prescient Psykers, after all, made it a point to be aware of everything around them. It was something of a specialty for them.

Without even breaking the rhythm of his strikes, he says, "Yes, child? Do you wish something of me?"

"I didn't want to disturb you, please carry on," Katara said. "I was just curious about the final attack on the Ohm. I wasn't there because I thought I was needed in the med bay, but I heard that the Ohm left pretty abruptly. I was wondering if you could tell me what happened then...and if you could help in constructing training programs dealing with the Ohm."

"Their true reasoning for withdrawing is beyond my knowledge, though I have my suspicions. The Ohm, though inhuman and wrathful, are extremely intelligent. Though the Chosen had put up some resistance to them, never had they been mobilized in such numbers as we had during the last battle."

"The fact that we posed any threat to them, however small, was likely a new experience for them. If I had to guess, I would say they likely wished to weigh their options rather than risk continuing their assault so that they may come to understand exactly what type of threat we pose."

He pauses, the simulation stopping for the moment.

"As for training, I have been considering the best way to go about something such as that."

Katara listened carefully, internalizing his words. So the Ohm hadn't really expected them to be a threat at all, and now that they were, they would probably going to try and figure a way to defeat them in another way. It had been that way in her world, particularly when she thought of the incident in the Northern Air temple with the balloons. Somehow, even though they had won, the fire nation used their defeat as a way for them to help them wage wars more efficiently. She hoped that the Ohm were at least scared for the time being ( ... )

"We were not prepared for its attacks because no one had ever fought one before. Now that we have some idea of what it is capable of, we can at least theorize ways to fight it."

She nodded. That had been one of the big things, that while Cargn had met and fought the Ohm before, there hadn't been things like the Node to contend with. This led to Katara's next question.

"What kinds of things was the Node able to do to fight against us? What powers did it have?"

"The battle lasted less than a minute, but from what I saw, the Node had particularly impressive psychic offensive and defensive abilities. However, I believe its more dangerous ability is how it can enhance the strength and capabilities of other Ohm around it."

So that was why it was such a big deal to attack the Node: with the Node out of the way, the possibility of powering down a swarm of Ohm was possible, and they never dreamed anyone would actually come to close to it. It was the Ohm's power boost: how strong would they be if the Node was taken out of the way.

"From what you saw Seer, is it possible to beat a Node, if even a particular individual could do it?"

Cargn looked down at the gleaming metal arm at his side.

"If I were aware of such things, we would not be having such problems. It will take more thought and planning before we can be ready."

"I see," Katara said. "Forgive my ignorance. But I would like to ask a favor of you."

She cleared her throat. "If you have any more training sessions on the Ohm, I'd like to take part. I came face to face with a few of them during shore leave, and I had the luck of having a full moon to help me. I might not have that luck again."
