The House That Who? Built [Open, bendytimed to before archeology plot]

There seems to be very little rhyme or reason to the buildings that make up the City in Stacy. Oh, there's a couple of places, like what has been become known as 'Religion Row', where certain types of buildings have been gathered together, but otherwise things are scattered about, just waiting to be found ( Read more... )

He craned his neck back, taking in the large house. Considering that they were on a living ship with technology way past their complete understanding, that and the abundance of mucus and snot, a Victorian style house was not what he'd have expected to find. When he picked up the comm message, this really wasn't what he expected to find. He gave the house another once over, just in case it might be better the second time around. It wasn't.

"It's..." Daniel tried very hard to find a polite way to put it and found there wasn't any. "...something," he finished lamely.

Spooky. A wreck. Dilapidated mess. Gone past "fixer upper" and into "rural ruins" territory. Not fit for human habitation.

It looked like something out of an old horror movie. And he wanted to move in with Victoria? Daniel almost expected to see bats flying out any minute now. Jamie knew how to find them alright. "Are you sure it's safe?"

"Of course I'm sure," replies Jamie, in that same confident tone he had when he once told Victoria the Yeti that had been coming after them was quite dead. It hadn't been, of course, but he had believed it at the time. And he believes the house is safe now ( ... )

Yeah, 'sound'. About as sound as using Budge's for translations. The wooden knob rocked to a halt like a guilty reminder. With any luck that was the worst of the damage, but at this point, Daniel wasn't counting on it. Although he almost had to admire how Jamie blithely kept going, as if the house wasn't out to prove him wrong.

Daniel had to wonder just what Jamie's definition of a "wee bit of damage" was, especially when he didn't regard structurally sound the same way other people did.

"You should probably get one of them down as quickly as possible," Daniel interjected quickly. This wasn't like putting the laundry off. This was a run down house, and there were some many ways someone could get hurt. "I'd like to help but you don't want someone finding any weak spots by breaking a leg."

Clearly Daniel hasn't seen some of the other buildings in the city they haven't had a chance to rebuild yet. "Ronnae said she'll be down after her shift is over," he points out. "And I'm sure Billy'll be by as well."

He can't suppose he really blames Daniel for being a touch wary given that last time in the TARDIS, but he can at least promise the man there won't be any puzzle doors or water filling any inescapable corridors, or whatever else Daniel might have come across in there while Jamie wasn't around. Well, unless there had been an infestation of dust, bits of furniture and broken windows.

"Look, if you'd prefer, we can clear some some space along the porch outside to store supplies and the like." That way if the roof is about to cave in, he can jump out of the way. "But I've been all over the first floor and I've not broken any legs yet. It's safe enough down here."

Jamie was extremely set on this house and trying to restore something that didn't look like it was worth the effort, which left everyone else to keep an eye on him and hope the house didn't give out from under him. Jamie, Daniel was learning, was very driven when he got his mind on something. And that something, today, was this wreck of a house ( ... )

Jamie's not always so driven, but doing something where Victoria's involved does tend to bring it that out more in him. If she hadn't been around, he'd not have bothered with doing anything with the house at all - that is, if he had even had wound up finding it in the first place. So he does understand where Daniel's coming from, even if it may not seem so right at the moment ( ... )

So far, so good. Jamie wasn't going to venture into the house for awhile. All they had to do was work on the porch. Daniel, admittedly, didn't have much experience with fixing up houses. It wasn't something that came up when you were trying to crawl down a shaft to get to a sarcophagus, but he was sure he'd get it quickly.

How hard could this be?

Daniel worked in silence for a few minutes, most of which were making sure the porch or anything near it was going to come down on them anytime soon. When it looked like the area was reasonably safe, Daniel focused on the task at hand. It turned out it wasn't had at all. The worst danger so far was possible splinters and looking for exposed nails. It wasn't exactly mentally stimulating or interesting, but help was help, and Jamie looked like he needed it.

"So you must really like Victoria." Daniel began. Now that he got into the flow of things, he found his attention wandering.

Unfortunately, while it's a fairly routine task, the fact remains it's still one that needs to be done at some point. If Daniel isn't willing to go into the house itself until one of the other engineers takes a look at it, well, it's something they could do ( ... )
