I feel sorry for neglecting NEWS so here I am with another translation of Shige's essay.
I do watch Soukon and all (srsly it could be better -_-;) but there's just not a lot going on lately...

Anyway, he can talk about the most ordinary things and make it philosophical :)
And he's definitely not boring.

Vol.43 -Sleep-

Sleep recommendation. "Humans should sleep as much as possible". This is not about the amount of time you sleep but about the depth and degree instead.

I'm the type that can't sleep deeply. I wake up about every 3 hours, even the soft sound of my cellphone's vibration will wake me up. Because of that, my sleep is light and I find it hard to get out of bed...I frequently  end up sleeping for more than 9 hours. I think there are surprisingly many people like me. Well, I guess it might have to do with the nature of my job and my irregular lifestyle but it's more than that.

During the '24 Hour Terebi''s press conference when we were asked, "Which member seems most likely to fall asleep during the show?", all the members just answered "Shige". I don't know why but I guess it's because I often sleep in the dressing room and look sleepy. It was troubling that even I had the self-awareness and was thinking "It might really be me". All of us have irregular lifestyles so if there's a cause for it, it'd have to be a personal issue.

It's probably because I'm not tired. If I just keep staying at home the whole day, sleep late and wake up late, is there still a need for me to get anymore sleep? Because of that, my battery won't go low. "You should be able to last a long time since you're so energetic?", it's nothing like that. It's because you're not energetic so your battery will frequently go low very quickly.

In other words, you can't go to sleep if you're not tired. That's why, one should move about and get tired in order to sleep. "Moving about" is ambiguous but I think it's means to work hard, study hard and play hard with all our might. Also, it's easy to forget about it but it's also important to eat well. I digress but in the movie 'The Machinist', Christian Bale, who played a character who hasn't been able to sleep for 1 year, ate only an apple and a can of tuna everyday for half a year in order to get ready for the role and successfully lost 30 kg. However, by the time he was skinny enough to fit in perfectly with the role, he could only manage to get 2 hours of sleep per day. It seems like it's true that calories are necessary in our sleep too.

For someone like me who just watch the TV, watch movies and read for the whole day, it's troubling because my brain is tired but my body is still energetic. And what's more, I don't really eat much most of the time, so the sleep demon just won't come to me. That's why, I consciously try to walk, run and go out as much as possible and chew my food well when I eat. I can sleep well on days when I do that. Sleep is the ultimate relaxation.

So, why do we sleep? If I can go without sleep, I won't mind not sleeping. It's not unnatural to feel that it's a waste to spend time on sleep when you only have 24 hours in a day. However, if we don't get enough sleep, it's not only bad for the body but also bad for your mind. It's often said, "You can't satisfy both the mind and body at the same time" but isn't it more optimistic to see it as something you do "in order to live fully"? Living hard → Sleeping hard → Able to live hard. A good cycle like this will be created in this way.

Suzuki Katsuhide, the director of a stage play that I've participated in, wrote this about sleep in the pamphlet.  "To sleep is to die. To wake up is to be born." I have always thought so too. They say that death is a neverending sleep, in order words, to sleep is like a short death. By dying once everyday, you start a new life the next morning. The basis for the theory of "Tomorrow is another day" can be found here isn't it?

How many times will a person go to sleep and wake up in his lifetime? If you think about each day as a new life, the pain and joy will also end within that day. Let's live each and every day. In order to do that, let's sleep well. I'm recommending sleep. That's the ideal way of life.

Come to think of it, when I brought up the topic of not being able to get to sleep to my friend, he gave me an interesting advice, "You'll feel sleepy if you read a boring book." Maybe that's why. Somehow, I'm starting to feel a little sleepy. My own writing...... I think I'll be able to sleep well tonight. Good night.
