This guy can write about anything under the sun.
Rainbow philosophy, anyone?
His self-defeating ending made me lol.
If anyone has anything interesting they'd like to get translated, do let me know and I'll see if I can do it.
But not the usual interviews in the magazines they regularly appear in (Myojo, Popolo, Wink Up etc), since there are already translators working on them monthly.
Vol. 39 -Rainbow-
There's something about rainbows. It was because of the stage play 'SEMINAR' I had been working on recently that made me think this way. It would be quite impossible for me to give a full summary of the plot so please allow me to leave that out. At the climax of the play, the water fountain on the set would start to flow. Loren, whom I play, would step into the fountain out of his guilt over his actions and a sense of emptiness from not having a mother. I would walk around the fountain, and see a rainbow at some point. In the middle of the pretty lighting and the sprinkling drops of water, a small rainbow can be seen. My interpretation is that the fountain signifies the water in his mother's womb and Loren goes back to being an unborn baby as he innocently tries to catch hold of the rainbow. Of course, there's no way he could do that. When he tries to catch it it disappears, then it reappears and he tries to catch it again but it disappears again... Then I would collapse into the water. I'm not an extreme romantic who'd try to reach out for a rainbow but at that point, I felt as if I was able to get a touch of it. To Loren in that moment, the rainbow was his mother. His mother was beautiful. Ephermeral. Delicate. And the seven translucent colors disappeared in a flash.
Yeah. There's really something about rainbows. I've heard that in Hawaii, seeing the rainbow means that "you'll be able to return to Hawaii again". I'll see the rainbow whenever I go to Hawaii, and I've been visiting every year so I guess it is true. But, actually Hawaii is also known as the "Rainbow Island" and the chances of seeing a rainbow are pretty high. Previously, when I saw the rainbow in Hawaii, there were two rainbows appearing side by side and I said excitedly to the locals "Double rainbow!!". I can recall that the car number plates in Hawaii also had a rainbow background. It is that symbolic of Hawaii. With its squalls and strong rays of sunlight, the common sightings of rainbows in Hawaii might be a natural phenomenon. But I guess that's also another reason why it's known as a spiritual power spot.
Rainbows are mysterious. Just like what I've written above, about the significance of the rainbow in Hawaii, in Chinese legends, there is a snake that has the power to control rain called the "Rainbow Snake". Also, in Christianity, it symbolizes "a new promise" and so on. The rainbow has many different meanings in different places. It just makes you want to give it some meaning. Such is the surreality of its colors, its unexpected appearance that it makes anyone feel good no matter how many times you've seen it. The great number of people who take pictures of rainbows on their cellphone cameras illustrates that.
A few volumes ago, I wrote an essay titled 'Rain'. I wrote about the reasons why I like rain and now I'm aware of the "after" that comes with rain. Now is the time when the rainy season comes to an end (well, it's still raining everyday when I'm writing this), and what we can look forward to is the blue sky and the brilliantly shining sun. I don't hate the rainy season at all but every summer I would be going over to Hawaii or Okinawa. Even I would be annoyed with the rainy season and I'll get into a refreshed mood when summer comes. If the rainy season is the heavy rain, then summer might be something like the rainbow.
Come to think of it, 7 is a lucky number. The jackpot slot machine also has 7 in it, (Note: I think there's one called Lucky Seven) and there's what we call lucky seven too. Perhaps it's matching up with the number of colors in a rainbow. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Colors that the human eye can see are made up of combinations of these colors, and the things that can be seen are a reflection of these seven colors. Everything the eye sees is the rainbow therefore the rainbow is everything. Maybe it's the same for things that can't be seen. The color of love might just be rainbow color.
Ah, but the number of colors in a rainbow varies depending on where you are. In Hawaii there are 6 colors, in Germany there are 5 colors... Maybe Lucky Seven and rainbows are not related at all. Is there really nothing to a rainbow after all?
