I was outside for a little too long yesterday, and now have a sunburn. I hate putting sunscreen lotion on because when I perspire it mixes with the lotion and then runs down into my eyes and stings them ( Read more... )

I have -never- heard of compost needing to be pasteurized, particularly by BAKING... the process of composting basically DOES that, because heat is what makes compost happen. There is a good book that John has called "Let it Rot!" with good information in it. It was first published in 1975.

As long as you make sure not to put any diseased plants in it, you should be just fine.

Remember, only believe 10% of what you read online. LOL!

Maybe I am a bit gullible, lol! I read what seemed like really good articles on composting which had that advice, that all compost should be pasteurized. I thought, ugh, I can't do that it will stink so much.

SueBee is right. Compost heats itself up and you need to turn it ocassionally. We used to have the neighbor put all of his big leaf hauls into our yard. He did landscaping and the dogs loved to sleep in it in the winter because it is warm. After a year we would put it around plants and it did wonders for them.

Yes, I did read that the interior of a compost pile would heat up. So I wonder why the heck some writers advise the pasteurizing step? I just can't see myself doing that. I don't want dirt in my oven or the smell wafting throughout our house, lol!
