Yes, you're right. They are linked. I think that it's hard to say what I would do if given power of whether someone lives or dies. Power definitely corrupts and it would be hard not to abuse it.
The US is no longer the technological leader nor the moral leader. Everything in the US is motivated by money. Some people are denied operations because they can't afford them, yet we're wasting millions and billions of dollars killing people in Iraq. The US used to be the land of freedom and opportunity, but I'm not free to do much of anything except consume crap and my opportunities are dwindling because of fiscal irresponsibility.
I'm not sure where I would go in Australia. Probably the topless beaches, I mean, tourist attractions. If I were to go, I would ask you for advice and would make sure to visit you. I think I might go back to Hawai'i first or maybe SE Asia. My goal is to take one major traveling trip per year to see more of this planet. It'll be expensive, but it will broaden my horizons.
I've heard that the health system in the US isn't so great. Kind of amazing really considering it's seemingly a rich and developed nation that it doesn't take better care of it's people. Don't get me wrong, Australia doesn't spend nearly as much money as it should on education and health (which lets face it is the thing most people are concerned about and which is what ultimately benefits a nation), but still the situation isn't quite as bad as what it seems to be over there.
Unfortunately I probably live in one of the (not THE fortunately) boring parts of Australia. It has it's perks from a great living place point of view, but for a tourist - not so much, unless you really like wine. Still I'm happy to give you tips if you ever make it out this way :)
The US' health care system is terrible. It's expensive and overly inefficient and doesn't need to be this bad. Everyone gets their panties in a knot when they hear socialized medicine, but other countries have shown that there is plenty of room for capitalism in health care. We just need to guarantee that every citizen has access to at least basic medical treatment.
