Summary: They met a dozen times over sixty years. The meetings were always accidental and always ended in a cheap hotel. Neither of them ever asked, or told, the other anything. The Doctor always seemed to understand. Jack never understood anything. Until 2009, when Jack understood more than the Doctor.
Why you should read it: The journey Jack takes, waiting for the Doctor to return, is a long one. What if he didn't have to be alone all the time? This is a marvelous story about a Doctor who hasn't lost everything and isn't burdened with guilt, who sees something special in Jack and keeps coming back. Beautiful imagery accents this lovely, gentle story, which nonetheless packs a massive emotional punch in the final scene. And did I mention the sex? I've never considered Jack and Five before, but believe me, I'm going to now. I highly recommend reading this with the inverse story, told from the Doctor's POV, linked below.
