Summary: TWxLord Peter Wimsey, Some stories were not only best left untold, they were best forgotten. It had been intended to be a meaningless wartime affair, but it wound up needing retcon.
Why you should read it: It's so much fun to read about Jack's adventures during Earth's history. This story is a crossover with the Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels. The dashing Captain Jack meets Major Peter Wimsey and his able batman, Sergeant Mervyn Bunter. The section of the story devoted to the past is written in a nicely rich style, evoking the original writing of the LPW novels. Jack is portrayed as an able officer, knowledgeable of the mores and habits of the time, and of the upper class/officers. This makes a nice change from the many portrayals of Jack as clueless about the times he lived through on Earth. What happens when Lord Peter seeks Jack out after the war? And how did Lord Peter and Bunter help Ianto get his job at Torchwood? The last sentence, set during modern times, neatly takes us back to the first section of the story, and gives us a new perspective on Jack and Ianto's relationship.
