Chapter sixteen

James

The next few days were productive as I cleaned up my apartment distracting me from the erotic thoughts swimming around in my head. Martha was giving me my space but I was getting desperate to talk to her that sometimes I wanted to knock on the door of her apartment. It never happened because she wasn’t home during the day. I knew that. I wanted to tell her about my new discovered feelings for Jack but I didn’t want to worry her.

I didn’t know how the investigation was going because I refused to talk to anyone and I knew that there was no way they were going to tell me. I started to feel quite lonely, desperate for someone to talk to. I couldn’t talk to my best friend back in London as his fiancé would just slam the phone down. I had his mobile number but she would answer that too. I was quite lucky I was going to be his best man actually.

I felt a vibration coming from my pocket which meant that my mobile was going off. Digging it out I answered it without reading the name on the display. I heard an Australian accent like mine talking to someone in the background. A smile grew on my face as I knew who it was.

“Hello?” I said again which got the man’s attention on the other end.

“James Elton, how are you?” he asked rather enthusiastically.

“Going well, Damien,” I replied very happy that he had rung me. “How are you?”

“Oh very tired, work has really worn me out.” Damien answered, “Also the preparations for the wedding haven’t helped either.”

“Sorry to hear that.” I replied with a smile, “I’m happy to report I’m going to be best man.”

Damian laughed, “Yes the news I was hoping for, so how’s work?”

“Well alright if I was working.” I replied rather angrily, “The boss decided to give me time off.”

“Well isn’t that good news?”

“Not really, it’s complicated not something I wish to discuss right now.” I explained, “So how’s Olivia?”

For the rest of the afternoon we talked on the phone discussing our various problems and other personal details. I felt happier after our little talk as it was nice to hear from Damian. He had been my best friend for a long time and the pleasure of being his best man at his wedding was a huge positive for me. It certainly kept my mind off the investigation and the dashing Captain Jack Harkness.

Later that night

“Oh come on you can pass it to him.” Rhys yelled from the couch. I was sitting next to him while we were watching the rugby on the TV. Gwen wasn’t home as she was working the graveyard shift because of the increasing weevil attacks in the Cardiff city centre. For some reason I wasn’t getting into it as I normally did but it probably was because Australia wasn’t playing. “You’re quiet.” He said turning to me.

“Sorry, I’m just tired I guess.” I replied looking at him with a smile, “Either that or I’m finding rugby boring.”

“I don’t blame you, Australia isn’t playing.” Rhys agreed turning back to the television, “Gwen told me about your suspension.”

“Oh did she? That’s nice.” I said rather miserably.

“She warned me that you might be miserable.” He replied, “Oh now you’ve messed it up.” He yelled at the TV.

“I’m glad we made that raincheck.” I said almost smiling, “Your yelling is quite amusing.”

“So is yours,” He replied back, “Did you see that?”

I looked at the screen, “Oh seriously why did he do that?” I yelled suddenly.

“Oh I can see that you two are having fun.” Gwen said as she entered the apartment.

I looked over at her, “I thought you were working the graveyard shift?”

She smiled, “Jack gave us the rest of the night off. Rhys love, could you place these bags in the bedroom.”

Rhys looked up and got off the couch. “Only be a minute.” He told me before taking the bags off Gwen. Gwen sat down on the couch next to me and smiled.

“So how are you?” She asked.

“Fine just miserable and very lonely,” I replied picking up the beer from the coffee table.

She nodded and looked at the television. I decided to speak further.

“Listen, I’m angry that I got suspended but I really don’t want to take it out on you.” I assured her before putting the bottle to my lips.

“No I totally understand.” Gwen said turning back to me with a smile, “You were just speaking your mind.”

“Yes I was and I’m miserable.” I agreed trying not to laugh.

“Martha wants you to talk to her sometime.” Gwen told me. “She’s very worried about you.”

I was about to reply when my mobile went off from the coffee table. I picked it up and answered.

“Please meet me at the pier; I need to talk to you.” A familiar voice answered.
