Chapter Eight

James

The police cars stopped near the end of an alleyway which was already sealed off. I walked up casually as I recognised the officer in charge. Police Constable Andy Davison, one of Gwen’s old work colleagues. He always seemed to be interested in our ‘spooky dos’ as he called them. He groaned though when he saw me.

“Hello James wasn’t it?” He asked looking me over.

“Yes, I work with your friend Gwen Cooper.” I replied. I knew that he already knew that but I wanted to jog his memory who I worked with. “So what do you have?”

Andy opened his mouth to answer when another officer walked up to us. He eyed me puzzlingly but it soon turned to anger.

“You work for Torchwood don’t you?” He asked rather disappointedly.

I nodded, “Of course.” I replied rather to the point, “Why?”

“No reason just recognised you.” He replied with a smile. “So does that mean you’re here to take over?”

“It depends if you can tell me what you have found.” I answered seriously.

“Well a corpse of a twenty five year old female, blonde, seems to have been stabbed in the chest....” He replied before I started to walk away. “Hey where are you going?”

“Sorry but it seems to be your lucky day.” I told him turning around, “Not what I was expecting.”

He seemed to smile at that before walking back to the leading officer in charge. At least it seemed to be good news for now, though I had to go looking for Jack before the police stumbled upon him as well, in case he had ‘died’ of course. I kept walking, trying not to think about Thomas. I was now worried that I would bump into him along the way. As I walked past the various shops my thoughts finally turned to Jack and where the hell he was.

Jack

I kept running, concentrating on the young black haired man in front of me. Though I had to dodge my way through the crowds of people. Thomas was just too fast but somehow I kept up like the adrenalin was really kicking inside my body. My thoughts turned to James and how I had left him back at the cafe. I wanted to protect him from Thomas reading his mind even further. James suffered from very dark inner demons and I really didn’t want that used against him. Still I couldn’t stop that nagging feeling that Thomas already knew about his troubled soul.

Now I was right behind him, close enough to touch him or even tackle him to the ground. I managed to do that once he led me to the park. He nearly cracked his head on the bench which I tackled him near. He started to struggle beneath me but I kept him pinned. He started to speak.

“Tell me, why is it I can’t read your mind?” He asked in a tone which showed puzzlement.

“Oh I know how to shut my mind off.” I replied in my usual flirtatious tone, “We all have big secrets to keep.”

“Of course, you know James is confused about you.” Thomas said rather flirtatious back. “He’s not sure if you are telling the truth about what you said to me.”

“Well it’s true that he could feel you reading his mind.” I replied truthfully like I had done back at the cafe. “Hey on how do you know that?”

“I can still hear his thoughts; he seems to be close to where we are.” He answered looking up at me with a smile.

I wanted to kill him.
