“Close your eyes, Daddy!” Jack instructed with an excited smile.
“Okay,” Hotch smiled some as he let his lids fall closed.
“No peeking!” the boy reminded his father as he got up from the floor where he’d been playing with his father, “Promise?”
“Promise, Jack!” Hotch moved to put his hands over his eyes in a gesture of good faith, as it were.
Jack giggled some and then scurried out of the room, down the stairs, and into the kitchen. “Did you light the candles yet?” he whispered excitedly.
“Not yet,” Jessie said with a soft laugh, “I thought we’d have dinner first, maybe even have you let the guests in?”
“Oh yeah!” Jack put his hand to his forehead dramatically, something he’d seen his father do on more than one occasion when the man forgot something. “I’ll do it now!” he exclaimed before dashing past his aunt to the woman’s kitchen door, opening it with such forceful excitement he nearly smashed Morgan in the side of the head.
“Woah, careful there kiddo,” Morgan said with a small laugh as Rossi caught the screen so it wouldn’t slam into the house.
“Serves you right for standing so close,” Emily teased.
Reid smiled, “Told you not to, but you didn’t listen.”
Morgan turned to Reid some as they began to step inside, “No, actually, you told me something about the physics of a screen door that I still don’t understand.”
“SHHHH!!!” Jack put his little finger to his lips, before giving what could only be described as the cutest version of the Hotchner glare possible, “You’re gonna ruin the surprise.”
Morgan gave a slightly surprised look at being shushed as the others tried not to laugh while they all piled into Jessica Brooke’s kitchen. “Hey guys,” Jessie spoke softly, “You can put all your coats in the closet just off of the next room and the gifts can go on the table over there if you want. We’ll be eating in the dining room anyway.” The kitchen table was for more family meals; those times when Hotch would stop by to have breakfast with his son or it was just her and Jack.
“Do you need any help?” Emily asked as she set her gift down with everyone else’s. She wanted to help however she could, after all it was only once a year the leader of the BAU had a birthday…and even less frequently was this day allowed to be celebrated by the whole team.
“Um, no, I’m all set, I think.” Jessie replied with a smile to the woman, “Garcia brought the cookies.”
“Of course,” Garcia chimed in raising the now unwrapped plate some before ducking between Morgan and Reid as they both went to snatch one and then setting them onto the counter.
“Rossi the wine,” Jessie continued as Rossi passed them, wine in hand, giving a wink and smile, “and I have the cake.” Then she looked over the team as a thought popped into her head, “Oh, um, Morgan?” She’d grown accustomed to referring to the team as Hotch did.
“Yes Ma’am?” Morgan headed over to them as he tried to make his reach for the plate of cookies casual only to get his hand slapped by Rossi who grabbed the plate and went to pop a cookie into his mouth.
JJ caught the cookie just before Rossi had the chance to enjoy it, “These are for dessert,” she reminded the man before smiling, “let’s set a good example for the young man, hm?”
“Reid?” Rossi offered jokingly, causing the others to laugh.
“Jack,” JJ corrected, still laughing some.
Jessie recomposed herself some, “Morgan, would you mind making sure there are enough chairs for everyone? You might need to bring some of the chairs and stools in from here.”
“Sure, no problem,” Morgan smiled and then grabbed a hold to Reid’s arm, “Reid’ll help me.”
“I will?”
“I don’t get a cookie, you don’t getta cookie,” Morgan replied as he left the kitchen with Reid in tow.
“I’ll go and set the places for everyone,” JJ offered before looking to Rossi, “maybe Rossi here can keep his hands busy bringing the food out?”
Jessie nodded some, “That’d be great actually, thank you. Shouldn’t be too hard, I made homemade pizza. Jack loves it.”
“Daddy loves it too!” Jack piped up.
“Yes, he does,” Jessie said to the boy with a smile. “And, if Garcia helps me in here,” she looked to the woman who gave an ok sign with her hand and smile, “I guess that’s it.”
Jack ran over to Emily and grabbed hold of her hand, “’Cuse me, Miss Prentiss?”
Emily, who’d started to feel a little left out without a task, looked down a little surprised and smiled, “You can call me Emily if you like, Jack.” It sounded so strange to have the boy address her so formally.
The boys giggled and blushed some, “Okay…Emily,” he giggled more. The idea of calling any adult outside his family by their first name was a little strange to him, “wanna help me?”
Jessie smiled at Emily, “Jack wanted you, specifically, to help him.” Which was why Jessie had told the woman she didn’t need anything.
“Oh,” Emily was deeply flattered that Hotch’s son had wanted her to help him. She looked down at the boy, “I’d love to help you, Jack. What is it you need help with?”
“Wrapping Daddy’s gift,” he then gave the woman’s hand a gentle tug, “Come on, the stuff’s upstairs and I wanna do it before dinner.” Jack insisted, nearly pulling Emily out of the kitchen as he went.
Emily followed the overenthusiastic boy through the dinning room (much to Morgan and Reid’s amusement until she threw out a random number that ruined their latest count of people to chairs), up the stairs, and down the hall some. She caught Hotch out of the corner of her eye and had to hold back laughter at the sight of the man, cross-legged, on the floor, with his hands over his eyes.
Jack brought her into his room and scrambled under the bed to pull out a box, “I hadta hide it so Daddy wouldn’t find,” he explained as he opened the box and removed first a card made of construction paper and then a jar of coins, “Daddy likes coins so I collected them until I had a whole jar.” He was clearly very proud of his gift; not in the least because this was the first time he was giving his father his own personal gift, not one that his aunt or mother bought for him to give.
Emily smiled at the boy, “That’s a wonderful gift, Jack, he’ll love it.” She knew Hotch would love anything Jack gave him but this especially. It was from the heart, something the boy had dedicated time and effort to get, “Do you know where the wrapping paper is?”
“Auntie Jessie cut up some paper bags for us to use,” Jack stated as he handed the jar carefully to Emily before digging under the bed once more to find the precut bags, “She said that, um, after you help me wrap the jar, I can decorate the paper and make it super pretty.”
“Yeah, you can,” Emily agreed, unable to stop smiling even as she began to help the boy wrap his gift. Thankfully she was somewhat skilled in gift-wrapping so that the jar was covered and neatly enough that, after helping Jack collect all his markers and stickers, he was able to start decorating the wrapped gift. “Are you all set here for now, Jack? I have to use the restroom.”
Jack nodded without much thought, “Yup,” then he looked up at her though, “but you’ll come back, right?”
“Yes, I will,” Emily assured him as she got up. She then headed out of his room and snuck off to where she’d seen Hotch. “How long have you had your eyes closed?” she asked him, barely above a whisper, as she tried not to laugh.
Hotch’s face lit up in recognition of the voice, “Longer than you think, short than I imagine, I’m sure,” he smiled wide even as he blushed some…he knew he must look ridiculous. Which caused him to start to pull his hands from his eyes at least. “What are you doing here?”
“Shh, Jack’s right across the hall and he’s sorta a stickler for the rules,” Emily moved closer to him, “takes after his father that way.”
“Yes, he does,” Hotch’s smile spread proudly.
Emily went to kneel before him, “And I can’t tell you what I’m doing here, it’ll ruin the surprise. But, while I have you here, alone,” she let out a low laugh before pressing her lips to his a moment, then pulling back a bit, “Happy Birthday, Aaron.”
“Miss Prentiss? Emily?” Jack called from his room curiously. He didn’t want to go in search for her and seem like he was a snoop or anything.
“Better go,” Emily whispered to a smiling and nodding Hotch as she stood up, “Keep your eyes closed, Sir.” she reminded him before heading back out of the room.
