Barack Obama is a natural-born citizen

There are some who claim that Barack Obama is not eligible to be President because he is not a natural-born citizen. This is not just utterly wrong - even if we assume that they are right, the internal logic of these claims is still wrong:

Some people say that Hawaii wasn't a state yet when Obama was born there. Is this actually true? No. The Read more... )

aside: I think the 'his Gramdmother said so' may be part of the 'Obama killed his grandmother to help his campaign' stupidity and not part of the 'Obama isn't a nb citizen' stupidity.

I have an aunt whose first name is Jesse. Like Stanley Ann Dunham/Soetoro, she was named after her father and generally goes by her middle name. It seems to have been a not-unheard-of practice in the Plains states mid-C20.

The Rs accuse the Democrats of some political liability. This always, always, always means that the Ds don't have it but the Rs do, and want to distract attention from it. Always. Bush slacks out on Vietnam War duty; therefore much money is spent accusing Kerry of being a fake on the Vietnam War.

McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, and this makes his "native-born" status dubious.

Clue stick!

Rove's innovation was to attack his opponents where they were strong, rather than where they were weak. Thus McCain was attacked for being mentally unstable (torture survivor). Kerry was attacked for hamming up his self-inflicted wounds (purple heart/silver & bronze star). Obama was attacked for being an elitist (Harvard law review, magna cum laude). I was going to say that it doesn't necessarily mean that the home team doesn't have the same problem, but I suppose that it wouldn't play so well if Bush had tried to argue that his (hypothetical) medals counted but Kerry's didn't.

Thanks a lot for that. It's good to have a nicely encyclopedic rebuttal of all the crazypoints.
