Google Reader for non-LJ content

Aug 02, 2008 10:16

I've been using LiveJournal syndication to read RSS feeds. It's worked more or less well, but billzunderman asked me to try Google Reader instead. It's actually pretty nice. Unlike LJ, Reader keeps track of what I've read and what I haven't read which means I know when I'm caught up. It lets me group my feeds by topic so that I can read all the new comics ( Read more... )

google, lj

Does it let you organize feeds into groups, such as "politics," "san francisco events," etc? If you add the feeds of your LJ friends to it, does it let you read friends-locked posts?

You can organize feeds into groups. You can't see private LJ feeds, and even if you could you couldn't see the LJ comments which are the entire appeal of livejournal. Therefore I suggest that you only use Google Reader to read external RSS feeds and continue to use LJ for LJ content.

I use Google Reader to notify me of LJ feeds, click to view it there and then generally follow the "Show Original Item" link if it is interesting enough to do so.

I don't go to LJ as LJ (sorry) but this way I can still know what's there.

There was somebody who wrote an interface to let you read private LJ feeds via Google Reader, but you have to add each one individually...I gave up after two, and as noted, you still have to go to LJ to see the comments.

I've taken all my rss feeds into reader and just read LJ stuff on LJ now, and it works well for me.

I made this move a while back as well. Google Reader is also pretty good on the iPhone, and I like that I won't end up reading the same item on my iPhone as I do on my computer. How does it fare on your Sidekick?

I started using NetNewsReader on iPhone for this -- it's a client app.

What I like about Google Reader is that it's all integrated. I can read a little on my home machine, a little on my work machine, a little on my iPod Touch ... and it all stays in sync. It remembers what I've seen already. The problem with any client-side approach is that it doesn't stay synced when I change clients.

I started using Google Reader instead of LJ for feeds becaues feeds always look dull in LJ so I'd always skip past them, even if they were really interesting stuff.

Interestingly enough, i read your journal through google reader. I don't read my friends list that often her on LJ but have subscribed to people that I want to read.

This is Bryan by the way.
