"I'd rather *not* hunt with Dick Cheney than ride with Ted Kennedy."

A lot of clever amateur actuaries shrewdly observe "I'd rather hunt with Dick Cheney than ride with Ted Kennedy." I find this logic flawed for the following reasons:

Ted Kennedy is 74 years old. He's been of driving age for 58 years, and if we assume he averages 20,000 miles per year he's driven 1,160,000 miles. He's also accidentally killed a Read more... )

Excellent analysis as always.

That should be "than" rather than "then" in the zippy bumpersticker text.

One would think a bigger deal would've been made of the fact that not only did she kill a boy, but she had a Dyke in the car with her.

I feel like there's a flaw in your logic, but I can't quite pin it down.

It has something to do with driving a car and shooting a gun not being equivalently dangerous per-day.

That's kinda my point. Driving a car and shooting a gun are two different things. If you go driving with Kennedy once you are, on the whole, exposing yourself to less danger than if you go hunting once with Cheney. If the bumper sticker said "I'd rather spend an entire year hunting with Cheney than spend an entire year carpooling regularly with Ted Kennedy" your observation would be a bit more relevant.

Ah! Normally when you're this analytical, you're not sarcastic at the same time. You lulled me into a false sense of truthiness.

Is this intended primarily as a humor piece, or should I start picking it to bits?

Both. The humor value is in the hyper-rational overanalysis.

I was waiting for how all the numbers worked out so I could figure out whether to be a Democrat or a Republican.
