Some of that is undoubtedly the mic setup, but there's a fair amount of (blog-based) reporting that the general responses were nervous applause at best, and that the response since then has been to marginalize the whole thing.

Where the line falls between mic setup and audience discomfort is hard to tell for sure, though.

When they applaud at the beginning and get up at the end you can hear crowd activity at normal volumes. I think the room was dead.
