THE DELICATESSEN MEMORIES OF A MOUSE

For Marty (Fat Baby Arthur)...who passed on earlier this week...

In the restaurant area of that landmark Jewish delicatessen, the lady at the next table had been staring at me. She finally leaned over and, as if telling me a secret that my table companions were not supposed to hear, and she whispered:

Sad to hear about your friend :-(

But always good to hear about your growing up in NY and your Jewish friends...I live in a formerly predominantly Jewish part of London and the echoes are there but fading...these things never last long especially in cities.

People break apart and move away, not so much because they are not having fun...but because they fear the future and the fact that the fun won't last. Astoria, once largely Jewish and Italian...is now Korean and Greek...but Al's Deli survives

One of my first online acquaintances was a big, burly Jewish bear (albeit very straight) from the Midwood neighborhood. We got to be friends believe it or not, arguing on various forums concerning the bombastic radio personality Micheal Savage. Jason was something of a devotee and disciple of Mr. Savage.
While we had some vehement disagreements over politics and policies, we had some wonderful conversations about the tasty food we each grew up with, his being the very Russian Jewish cuisine of his Midwood upbringing. I'd love to meet up with Jason and get a tour of his Midwood haunts.
Last I heard, the man who lived in the same zip code all his life, had bought a piece of retirement property near Ashville, NC.

Jason was somewhat bitter and resentful and seemed to have a persecution complex, very similar to that of his idol, Micheal Savage.
Yes, he was from Midwood Brooklyn. He promised me a Brooklyn Deli tour should I ever make it back up to NYC...
