Title: A Serpent Author: Huinárë Characters/Pairing: Gríma, Éowyn Rating: G Warnings: n/a Book/Source: Lord of the Rings Disclaimer: Characters belong to Tolkien. No profit reaped by myself, aside from a wealth of intellectual giddiness.
Ah, love it! My fave parts are the seemingly contradictory comparison of Eowyn to a serpent in the grass, and the idea of a shadow as impending darkness but also as something cast by long-standing institutions. Plenty of dualities, which is appropriate for a drabble about a traitor, and a warrior with a secret identity.
Thank you! In thinking about these two characters, I've perceived them both as standing in a long shadow of sorts, in a more personal sense, amidst the greater shadow cast from Mordor.
What an interesting take here. I loved the off-hand denigration of the "...long shadow..." of Rohan's traditions laid side by side with the growing shadow of the Enemy. I can't say I enjoyed this because it is meant to keep the reader off-balance. But it was beautifully realized.
Heheh, thanks, it sounds like it was a bit of an uncomfortable read, which is what I was going for. I think there was all sorts of weird awkward discomfort between these two at this time.
No and yes. He wants to manipulate her and play on her discontent, which he's something succeeded in doing, but after his own fashion he's also trying (and failing soundly) to befriend her.
