Poor Denethor indeed. He is a classic sort of tragic figure. Undone by both love and excessive pride.

Delicately painful. I can see all this as part of Denethor's brittleness... and to that end, he never bends, but eventually he breaks.

That's a very good way of putting it. All this grieving takes place behind closed doors, it's never displayed in public. But the greater the grieving, the stiffer and harder the shell often. And when he finally breaks it is inevitably in an extreme and tragic way.
