Whips of rain lash down on rattling window panes. There's a scent of her in the room...under the smell of candle-wax.
Phantoms. Borrowed from his inventory of memories.
He remembers her scents in isolation. The scents that when she was alive formed an inevitable whole...akin to the pattern of her breathing.
Another fragment: the smell of her hair at the nape. It hurts when the memory hits.
There's more cheer in Silent Street than in the Steward's house...they say.
He watches the window-candle reflected in the rain.
Perhaps in time these fragmented ghosts will unite. Form an inevitable whole...once more.
