A VERY intriguing idea that perhaps Denethor saw/sensed Sauron's attempt to probe Pippin, and that Gandalf might have perceived some slight remnant of that. But if so, then it certainly sheds a new and sinister light on Denethor's reception of Pippin in Minas Tirith...

I hadn't actually thought of Denethor seeing/sensing Sauron looking at Pippin; more that Pippin picked up, without realising it, an echo of Denethor from Sauron, and that Gandalf then detected that. But your re-interpretation is intriguing - because, as you say, wouldn't that just cast a different light on Denethor receiving Pippin sworn to his service? Hmmm, I didn't quite realise I'd done that!

I love this stream-of-consciousness sort of style you incorporate into the piece. It works very well for Gandalf, I think.

I'm glad it works for you. Gandalf must have so much on his mind at that point, and all that time to mull it over as Shadowfax is racing southwards...

I do like the sense here that Gandalf's mind is so crammed at this point that he flits from thought to thought - racing with Shadowfax, indeed.

He's in such a hurry to get there - I always get such a sense of his urgency at that point in the book.

It's a really interesting idea, and whether it's canon or not I like to think about.

Good, I'm always glad to provoke thought/stir up trouble! ;-)

Oh, I like this hint that Gandalf has at least some idea that someone else besides Sauron was aware of the Hobbit's mischance. And the intensity of the ride and Gandalf's worries is so well communicated.

I'm glad the intensity comes across, thank you! And I didn't want to make it any stronger than a hint, but somehow I don't think Gandalf is entirely surprised when he discovers that Denethor has been using the palantir - so the possibility must at least have occurred to him...
