It's an intriguing thought, I must say, that Gandalf might've sensed Denethor.

It's probably horribly acanonical. But Gandalf is certainly aware that Denethor is far-seeing - he warns Pippin about how perceptive Denethor is - and I'm sure that once he gets to MT he starts to suspect that Denethor is seeing More Than He Oughter; whether he suspects this early is probably a bit of a stretch...

It might be a bit of a stretch for this early on but it's a thought to be considered, I feel. There was plenty going on and he might've been trying to anticipate events so he could gauge what was happening.

You captured this very well above. He's thinking of so much and yet ...

He really does have all Middle-earth's cares on his shoulders - even more so after being sent back by the Valar as Gandalf the White! No wonder he gets a bit tetchy ;-)

Poor Pippin - his mind must be a very crowded place right then.

Somehow I imagine Gandalf, Sauron and Denethor inside it as if they are in a Hall of Mirrors - everything warped and no way of truly seeing who else is there...

Hee! Yes, poor Pippin with his head full of Maiar and scary Stewards - though Gandalf would probably tell him it served him right. I like the idea of the Hall of Mirrors - I've always wondered if JRRT also had in mind St Paul's line about "seeing through a glass darkly"...

I've thought that too - especially for Denethor.

The Steward sends for succour - knowing not his King will answer!

That's an interesting detail.

Gandalf has so many of the agendas and secrets and politics of the whole Age in his head, and half the time he's the only one - no wonder he has a lot on his mind on that ride south...

You've got a lot going on here in your 100 words. Very well realized!

Gandalf's got a lot going on on that ride South, I've always thought, so I'm glad if I managed to bring that out.
