Oh, this is lovely, especially the description of the mackerel sky - I had that last night, just after sunset when I left work, and it was exquisite. Thank you for this link between our world, and Tolkien's!

I wanted to get across a sense of them meeting as 'people' for the first time - rather than Lord Boromir, Captain General of Gondor sitting watch with Prince Legolas of Mirkwood.
