What an interesting story. And it's lovely to imagine that Legolas would enjoy Gimli's company on such an adventure.

I really am going to write more of the expedition.

At the end of my story The Valinor Trail Legolas had worried about undertaking such a journey - until Gimli told him they had better get started as soon as possible as he wanted to see these new mountains and lands before he died.

These probably make more sense to someone, like yourself, who knows the Returnverse. I guess it follows from Intermezzo - which I saw as a sort of prologue, but never posted anything further.

However, the 'further' is actually begun on my hard-drive, but I was having problems wrangling it as I wanted to add the incident with the High King, but couldn't get it right, somehow.

Having now covered that in six drabbles I think I can go back to the story proper again - I really, really, will try to post it in the next week or two.

*sings the Away and boil your head, you ill-informed, insensitive clod song at the High King*

My dear, you've had quite enough to deal with of late! When and as you like; we will all be happy to read anything with which you choose to grace us. :)

(Unless knowing I'm sitting here privately going "Fic! Fic! YAAAAAAAAAAY" and doing Kermit arms at the thought of it is at all encouraging?)

And now I wonder which blunder Gil-Galad has committed to get such a rebuff...

The ruling house of the Great Greenwood, also known as Mirkwood, blame Gil Galad for the death of Legolas' grandfather and many of his fighters.

So for the Noldorin High King to offer him to take charge of an expedition currently led by Oropher's grandson shows not only a disregard of Sindar and Silvan royalty, but something of a disregard for any history that happened in Middle Earth!

You whetted my curiosity nicely before you revealed what the king had said!
I'm sure Gil-galad would be horrified at the suggestion of leading Oropher's grandson anywhere.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Yes I can imagine he would be about as happy with the suggestion as would Legolas. Although I can't see him being happy to be a minor cog in the High King's court either - perhaps he has already escaped which is why the HK wants to bring him back under his control!

Keiliss (in one of her 'verses) has Gil-galad move north and found a settlement for Valinorean misfits...

Yes - that was the very settlement I had in mind :)
