What Goes Around, Comes Around

“...Legolas Thranduilion, of the Woodland Realm.”  The strange Elf clad in brown-and-green bows gracefully to the Dwarves’ stiff nods; only Mithrandir, perhaps, notices his expression as his gaze meets Gloin’s.

Some time later, in Lothlórien:

“My thanks.  For... back there, in Khazad-Dûm,” Gimli growls, raising his goblet. “Your health.”

“One good turn deserves another,” the Elf replies lightly. Then, as the Dwarf looks blank; “A Dwarven axe saved my life, once, before the Lonely Mountain. I only realised at Elrond’s Council... that it was your father's.”

Gimli has to be slapped, with Dwarf-like vigour, on the back as he chokes.

"Strange Elf clad in brown and green" is a direct lift from FoTR, The Council of Elrond. The incident Legolas is referring to is entirely fabricated by me, from the previous drabble in this series, here.  Whereas Legolas' help rendered "back there, in Khazad-Dûm", is canonical, and I once drabbled it here...
