The main events were the same as
Saito's Ch6: the sumo wrestling performance, the Rasetsu in Shimabara, and Yamatoya aflame. But as opposed to Saitou's, Okita's story is still heavy.
Okita Route Chapter 5.
Deep in the night of 6/25, Ryu was woken by an eerie shriek. He ran to Niimi's room. Hijikata and Sannan were already there. Niimi didn't think he's at fault for the Rasetsu's escape. He even suggested to wait till daybreak to catch it, ignoring the possibility for the Rasetsu to go on a killing spree before that.
Holding back his anger, Hijikata asked Ryu to gather every captain who knows about Ochimizu.
Hijikata ordered them to split up and find the Rasetsu. After the other captains left, Okita showed up in an eased manner and asked what's up. Hijikata was pissed at his attitude.
Okita: You don't need to yell. I was practicing in Mibu Temple. Anyway, what are you doing here? Are you two planning something evil?
Now even Sannan frowned. (Hijikata aside, I'm surprised he dared to speak to Sannan like this. XD)
Sannan told him a Rasetsu escaped, and they've sent everyone they can to search of it.
Okita: I guess I should be going too, since I know about Rasetsu, and I have the ability to slay one.
Hijikata: Wait up, Souji.
Okita: Now what? Anything else you want?
Hijikata: You're not joining the search. Stay in the quarters.
Okita: Heh? Isn't this an emergency? Why am I the only one staying here?
Hijikata: Someone wondering around without telling anyone where he's going isn't reliable enough for this job. Go back in the building. Your aid isn't needed this time.
Hearing "isn't needed", Okita gritted his teeth.
Okita: Why are you leaving me out? Am I not one of Roshigumi?!
Hijikata: One of Roshigumi? Like this? Easy for a self-centered brat to say!
Sannan: Calm down, Hijikata-kun. The first priority now is to capture, or kill, the Rasetsu that escaped. Considering this situation, leaving Okita-kun out isn't the best plan. However, I agree it's worrisome for Okita-kun to go alone. Therefore, Ibuki-kun, please go with Okita-kun as a supervisor.
Ryu: Wait! Me? Search for the Rasetsu with Okita?
Okita: What supervisor? Am I that untrustworthy?
Sannan: Better safe than sorry. It's our duty to be prepared for the worst situation. For example, if you got hurt in battle, Ibuki-kun can go find help.
Okita: ... Me? Hurt in battle? Never.
Sannan: I said "if". If you're determined not to accept this, then stay in the quarters as Hijikata-kun told you to.
That's that. Okita bit his lip, and then replied unwillingly.
Okita: I see. I'll take your way. Now I have to search for the Rasetsu and babysit Ibuki-kun at the same time. Sannan-san, you're such a slave driver.
Ryu: Okita... Okita! Are you listening? Don't ignore me...
Okita: Hush.
Okita looked into the darkness at the end of the road, and took battle stance. From the darkness the white-haired monster jumped at them.
Okita: Tough luck for you for running into me!
He dodged the attack and cut deep on the Rasetsu's shoulder, slowing it down. Then he pierced the Rasetsu's chest.
Ryu: Ah! You missed the heart!
The hole in the Rasetsu's chest began to fill.
Okita: I didn't miss! I meant to aim there!
Okita drew his sword from its chest, and aimed for the heart again.
Rasetsu: ... Wait! Please!
Not the monstrous laugh, but human words came out of the Rasetsu's mouth.
Rasetsu: I... I didn't do anything! This afternoon that Niimi guy gave me this weird medicine, and then I don't remember a thing! Please have mercy! Spare me! I don't want to die!
Okita frowned in hesitation. After a little thinking, he turned toward Ryu.
Okita: Say, Ibuki-kun. Neither Hijikata-san nor Sannan-san ordered to kill the Rasetsu on sight, right?
Ryu: What?
The Rasetsu attacked. Without thinking, Ryu bumped the Rasetsu with his body, and stopped his attack.
Ryu: Okita! Hurry!
But when Okita came to, and raised his sword again, it was too late. The Rasetsu turned and fled.
Ryu was ready to chase it, when he heard its scream from the other end of the road.
Saitou: Are you two alright?
Saitou stepped out of the darkness. Blood was dripping from the sword in his hand.
Saitou: This kind of opponent should be no match for you. Did you let your guard down?
Okita: Yeah. I guess I'm not in a good condition today.
Saitou: I'll take the Rasetsu. You two can go back to the quarters first.
Ryu: Huh? I can help. Wouldn't it be too heavy for you to carry alone?
Saitou: Shinpachi and Sano are searching around this area. Don't worry. Go back first.
Ryu: I see. Thanks.
Okita didn't say a word on the way back. Ryu couldn't hold back his uneasy feeling. He asked why Okita hesitated and even asked Ryu if it's alright to capture the Rasetsu alive. Okita showed his sarcastic smile.
Okita: Oh, that. You see, capturing alive would be more challenging. Since Hijikata-san had so many complaints before we left, I wanted to bring it back to surprise him. That's all.
Ryu: You're not fooling me! That's not what happened!
From what Ryu saw, he was puzzled on whether he should kill the Rasetsu or not. He was so puzzled as to try to get someone else do the final decision.
Okita: You're smarter than I thought.
He finally gave up, and looked up in the sky.
Okita: I can't describe the feeling exactly, but when the Rasetsu begged for mercy, I was thinking... If I kill this Rasetsu, will I make Kondou-san sad again?
Ryu: Huh?
It was a duty of Roshigumi, and a direct order from Hijikata and Sannan. Following the order wouldn't make Kondou sad or angry. Ryu thought. Okita still didn't understand what Kondou was angry for.
Okita: It that all? I must go report to Hijikata-san now.
After Saitou and the others carried the dead body back, the commanders and vice commanders demanded an explanation from Niimi. Serizawa recognized the Rasetsu was the ronin he arrested earlier. He allowed Niimi to do the interrogation, but didn't give permission to use Ochimizu. Seeing no one stood on his side, Niimi reluctantly promised he won't test Ochimizu on ronin again.
Sannan and Hijikata's discussion of this matter:
Interlude #33 - Dear Little Brother
One afternoon, Ryu heard someone calling at the door. It was the master of the sumo wrestler stable in Osaka, who came to visit Hijikata.
He led him to Yagi House. Hijikata greeted the stable master and invited him inside for tea, smiling all the time. He was smiling so warmly and talked so courteously that Ryu wondered if he's the same person. After they went inside, Ryu spoke to himself.
Ryu: Wow. I never thought he can be so amiable, almost like a merchant.
Okita: That's because he had apprenticeship in a merchant's house.
Suddenly Okita's voice came from behind and startled Ryu. Okita, with a wooden sword in hand, invited Ryu to practice with him. Ryu, didn't want to be beaten up again, changed the subject by asking more about Hijikata. Okita said Hijikata had apprenticeship in Matsusakaya.
Ryu: Matsusakaya? The famous Matsusakaya?
Okita: Yes. He doesn't like to talk about his experience there, though. Not only that, he showed great talent since he was a kid.
Ryu: Such as?
Okita: You know Ishida Powdered Medicine, the medicine Hijikata-san's family makes? His family was renowned in that area. When it was time to collect the herb for medicine, he gathered all the grownups in the village to help.
Ryu: Grownups? No matter how renowned his family is, they're not going to listen to a kid, right?
Okita: Of course not. Not in the beginning. They said it's just kiddy talk. But Hijikata-san didn't bother to correct the ones who belittled him.
Ryu: Why? I thought he wouldn't take insults lightly.
Okita: When a person can't see through his opponent, and take his opponent lightly, he let his guard down and is easy to deal with. Hijikata-san can think this deep, ever since he was a kid.
Ryu: Wow... Say, you know a lot about Hijikata-san.
Okita: I'm merely repeating what Kondou-san said. "Toshi is great." "Toshi is so smart." "I'm so proud to have a friend like this." And such.
There's loneliness in his eyes.
A couple days after meeting the stable master, Hijikata gathered everyone, and announced they'll help in the joint sumo wrestling performance of wrestlers from Kyoto and Osaka.
There were doubts on why they should do this unfamiliar and seemly unrelated job, but Hijikata said it's helpful in amending the relationship with the sumo wrestlers in Osaka, and in clearing their name in Osaka. Besides, since sumo wresting was very popular in Osaka and Kyoto, when the townsfolk see Roshigumi working alongside the sumo wrestlers, it'll give Roshigumi a good image too.
Hearing this, everyone's face lightened up.
They must have suffered a lot from being detested here and there, Ryu thought.
No one had experience in preparing for a performance, but Hijikata got this covered. He investigated all the details on what needed to be done, and quickly gave instructions to everyone, one by one. Ryu looked toward the corner Kondou was sitting. Kondou seemed to be very pleased with how Hijikata handled this so skillfully.
Kondou: Say, Souji. Isn't sumo wrestling performance fun? We'll make it the best performance, and bring smile to everyone in the city!
Okita: Of course. When Hijikata-san's taking the lead, there's no way we'd fail.
Kondou sounded so happy. Okita replied with a smile too.
Kondou: Yep. When it comes to sword skills, I won't lose. But in things like this, he's much better. He's really something. Ideas keep popping out of his head.
Okita: But Kondou-san has what he doesn't have. You're strong, kind to everyone, and smart too, being able to read all those difficult books.
Kondou: Nah. I know nothing about accounting. What am I going to do without Toshi?
Okita: ...... Indeed.
He was still smiling, but his tone became stiff. Suddenly, Hijikata called for Kondou from across the hall.
Kondou: Alright. Talk to you later, Souji.
Okita: Yes. We can talk later.
While Kondou and Hijikata talked passionately, Okita watched them in a distance. His look was so cold that it's hard to imagine he was the same person smiling a moment ago. It's like he wanted to join them, but didn't know how to.
One night, Serizawa told Ryu to accompany him to Shimabara. Ryu asked why he didn't bring Niimi and Hirama as usual. Serizawa said Niimi was busy. As for Hirama...
Serizawa: I told him to send my uniform to laundry store, but it took forever to get it back. I was annoyed at how clumsy he was, and punished him... too much, I suppose. He can't get up today. I should've held back a little.
Ryu: Maybe I'm not in the position to say this, but aren't you a little rough on him lately? I don't recall seeing him without bruises for one day. He has followed you all the way from your homeland. Why not be nicer to him?
Serizawa suddenly lost it, and started whacking Ryu like crazy.
Serizawa: What makes you think you have a say in how I treat Hirama? You've been a servant and will remain one, yet you're lecturing me on how I should treat my retainer?
Ryu tried to say he didn't mean to, but didn't have a chance. Serizawa's iron fan kept hitting him mercilessly. He covered his head, trying to protect himself, and looked up. There's insanity in Serizawa's eyes. Was he the same man talking reasonably a moment ago?
Kondou: That's enough, Serizawa-san!
To his surprise, Kondou appeared. He stood in front of Ryu like protecting him, and looked straight into Serizawa's eyes and asked.
Kondou: What's going on? Why are you beating Ibuki-kun like this?
Serizawa: This unreasonable dog needed discipline. It's no business of yours.
Kondou: I'm also one of Roshigumi's commanders. I will not tolerate such violence in the quarters. Ibuki-kun isn't a beast that can't talk. There's no need to discipline him this way!
Kondou glared at Serizawa, not budging an inch. Serizawa glared back.
Serizawa: ... Boring.
Then he left for Shimabara by himself. Kondou turned to Ryu with concern.
Kondou: Ibuki-kun, are you alright?
Ryu: Ye... yeah.
Ryu wiped the blood from his face and stood up. Kondou looked at him with compassion.
Kondou: The wounds seem severe. Better treat them quickly. Gen-san has ointments that stops bleeding. Come. Let's get you some.
Ryu: Nah. I'll be fine. Bleeding like this will stop soon enough. I'm quite used to it. It's nothing.
Ryu said jokingly, but Kondou suddenly raised his voice.
Kondou: What are you talking about? You're not supposed to be used to it in the first place!
Ryu: Um... Wait. I'm the one got beaten. Why are you so angry?
Kondou realized he startled Ryu, and lowered his head.
Kondou: ... Sorry. What happened to Souji when he's little came to mind, and I just can't stand by and watch.
Ryu: Don't worry about me. Unlike Okita back then, I'm not a kid now. I know when to run when I really have to.
Kondou smiled at this reply.
Kondou: If you say so. But if you need help, don't hesitate to ask.
Kondou: By the way, how is Souji doing?
Ryu recalled Okita's expression when looking at Kondou and Hijikata the other day. It's strange, but Ryu can't describe it exactly. So he gave a vague answer.
Ryu: Well, same as usual, I guess.
Kondou: I thought he looked depressed. There were too many things at hand, so I hadn't got the time to have a good talk to him. Besides, I think he's been avoiding me after what happened in Osaka.
Ryu: Nah. Wasn't him happy when talking with you the other day?
Kondou: That's not the usual Souji. I've been with him since he was little. I can tell when something's wrong. ...I scolded him when he slashed the sumo wrestlers in Osaka. But it's not like I think ill of him. When bringing him to Kyoto, I didn't want him to kill. But now it's different. Since he wanted to stay in Roshigumi, he's going to do it sooner or later.
Ryu: Then why did you scold him like that?
Kondou: As for why... He's not aware of the weight of a life, and what it means to take it. Our swords should be wielded to protect the people of Kyoto and Osaka. Without a will like this, a sword is merely a tool for robbing people of their lives.
Kondou: He is gifted. As he sharpen his skills in this city, there's no telling how strong he will become. Therefore, I don't want him to have wrong ideas on whom to slay, and for what reason he swings his sword.
Kondou: ... Sorry. I've kept you too long. Please tend your wounds and take a good rest.
Ryu: Alright. Thanks again.
Kondou smiled, said good night, and headed back to Yagi House.
"Wield the sword only to carry out his will" was what Kondou-san hoped for. Ryu wondered if Okita can do that.
For Kondou-san, it's natural to weild his sword for his will, and for righteousness. But for someone who lacked feeling and sympathy, it's hard for him to understand. It's like asking Saitou to wield his sword with his right hand. Or asking Nagakura, Heisuke, or Harada to negotiate as smoothly as Hijikata-san.
With these thoughts spinning in his head, Ryu went back in his room in Maekawa House.
When tossing and turning in bed, Ryu recalled Okita's words in Mibu Temple that night.
Okita: I kept thinking what I can do for Kondou-san. Then I came up with a conclusion. There is nothing else I can do except for becoming a sword, to kill people.
The only thing in his head was "how to be useful to Kondou-san".
Speaking of will or righteousness... Rather than not understanding it, it's more like he didn't care about it. He only cared about whether the person in front of him was Kondou-san's enemy or not.
Considering what his childhood was like, Ryu felt he can relate to Okita's feelings. When he was striving to live, if there was someone like Kondou-san who reached out a hand, Ryu would probably do the same thing as Okita.
Saeki Matasaburou, the soldier who stole Serizawa's ornament, drank Ochimizu and escaped.
This time Sannan told Okita he must kill the Rasetsu on sight. Ryu asked to accompany him. During the search, Ryu tried to tell Okita what Kondou said. But whenever he tried, Okita closed the conversation in an offensive and sarcastic manner.
They spent days searching in vain. Until on 8/10, Yamazaki told them Saeki should be hiding in Shimabara. After Yamazaki left to inform the others, Okita decided to do it by himself.
This time he finished off the Rasetsu without problem. As he wipe the blood off his sword emotionlessly, Ryu had a flashback of the ghost-like Okita he saw on the night of his first kill.
Shinpachi: Hey! Souji!
Familiar voice and footsteps came from a distance.
Saitou: We rushed here as soon as knowing Saeki hid in Shimabara. Looks like it's been taken care of.
Shinpachi: Geez! What did we all came here for?
Okita: You're too slow. I already killed that Saeki guy. Too bad.
Okita replied proudly. Hijikata looked at him quietly, holding back his words. Okita seemed to have felt it, but didn't dare to make eye contact with him.
Hijikata: Well done.
Okita: Whatever. I didn't do this to get Hijikata-san's praise.
He said this without looking at Hijikata. Hijikata sighed and told them to go back first.
Sannan was waiting for them at the front door.
Sannan: Welcome back, both of you.
Okita: I killed the Rasetsu exactly as ordered. There's nothing to worry about.
Sannan: I can see that from your looks, Okita-kun. Well done.
Sannan smiled in content. Okita stared at him for a while, then he spoke.
Okita: May I ask something? Why did you emphasize "kill him" back then?
Sannan: That's because Okita-kun is the sword of Roshigumi.
Okita: The sword of Roshigumi?
Sannan: Your sword skill is unparalleled. Soon, words like "there's a fearsome swordsman in this city", "he's Okita Souji of Mibu Roshigumi" will spread in this city. Ronin will fear your sword, and the place you belong to.
Sannan spoke like he had already saw the future. In displeasure, Okita listened quietly.
Sannan: Hear me out, Okita-kun. This sword is, and will be, absolutely needed for Roshigumi. This sword, and the strength to kill, is essential for pushing Kondou-san up.
"For Kondou-san"? Ryu screamed in his heart. That's like a spell to Okita! If something is said to be "for Kondou-san", Okita won't go against it. He can't go against it! Sannan had been with them ever since the Shieikan days. Surely he understood Okita more than Ryu did.
Sannan continued, almost like he's driving Okita into a corner.
Sannan: I'm afraid your sword will be stained with even more blood afterwards. In some cases, possibly not in the way the commander of Roshigumi hoped for... I believe it's something your sword can cut off eventually.
Okita looked at Sannan quietly. Sannan, not avoiding his look, stared back. The intensity of the atmosphere between them kept increasing. It's almost like they'd draw their swords anytime.
Suddenly Okita sighed, and was all smiles.
Okita: I see. Sannan-san knows how to use me better than Hijikata-san does.
Sannan smiled bitterly at Okita's attitude and remarks.
Sannan: Okita-kun understands, right? Kondou-san and Hijikata-san definitely acknowledge your strength. However, what's dear to them isn't your talent, but you yourself. It's just that I'm more heartless than they are.
His eyes narrowed when saying this. The cruel smile nearly made Ryu shiver. But Okita laughed in amusement.
Okita: I could say the same. If Sannan-san isn't an ally to Kondou-san, I won't have any hesitation in killing you.
Okita really meant it. Ryu felt a chill down his spine. To his surprise, Sannan smiled.
Ryu felt he can't catch them. However he must stop them, and tell Okita about Kondou's feelings before it's too late.
Ryu: Wait... wait! You said it's for Kondou-san, but that's not he wants to see! Kondou-san told me, "Swords should be wielded for will. Without a will, a sword is merely a tool for robbing people of their lives!" He hopes that you can think over what killing is about!
Ryu tried desperately in conveying Kondou's feelings. But Okita merely smiled.
Okita: That's Kondou-san.
Ryu was speechless. How could Okita accept Sannan's words over Kondou's?
Ryu: Okita!!!
It's not too late to turn back! There should be a way to not break Kondou-san's heart! But Sannan stopped him.
Sannan: This isn't an issue you have a say in. Ibuki-kun, you should have better understanding of where you stand.
Ryu: What... what's that?
Sannan: Before long, Roshigumi will be renewed. The Regulation will be carried out thoroughly, making this place more rigid than it is now. It'll be troublesome if you think you can always have your way, as an outsider under Serizawa-san's protection.
On 8/13, the sumo wrestling performance was a huge success. People who knew about the discord between sumo wrestlers in Kyoto and Osaka were all amazed by how Roshigumi made this joint performance possible. And as a result, they welcomed Roshigumi. Roshigumi had earned both fame and money in this accomplishment.
Ryu: Okita was right. Hijikata-san is really something.
At dusk, everyone returned to the quarters to rest. But after hearing the inspectors' report, Hijikata yelled.
Hijikata: All of you! Get ready for dispatch, on the double! It's an emergency!
Heisuke: Emergency? What happened?
Hijikata: I'll explain later. C'mon! Move it!
When they arrived, what met their eyes were much more than expected.
Shinpachi: Se... Serizawa-san!
Serizawa stood motionless, with the merchant's house aflame behind him. Crouched at his feet was the merchant, beaten up. Serizawa's voice rang across the street.
Serizawa: The owner of Yamatoya has made a fortune unjustly by trading with foreigners! Also, he has foolishly rejected to provide fund for Roshigumi to protect the capital city! These are adequate evidence to say he's a middleman of Sonno Joi ronin! Therefore Serizawa Kamo, the commander of Roshigumi, hereby bring him to justice!
From the civilian's cold looks and backbiting, Ryu knew what they earned today just went down the drain.
Okita: Hijikata-san is royally pissed.
Okita murmured softly.
Hijikata: Shinanigans! Who would set a house on fire just because the owner refused to be robbed? All of you! Bring over the buckets! Extinguish the fire at once!
Serizawa: Hijikata, this is a direct order from the commander! You will not change it your way, out of your personal judgment.
Hijikata: What?!
The two were yelling in a distance. Okita merely watched them calmly.
Ryu: Aren't you angry?
All efforts had gone to waste. Ryu can relate to Hijikata's anger. Even Ryu felt Serizawa had really gone too far.
Okita: I am. How could I not be? After all, the person happiest about the success was Kondou-san.
In contrast to his words, his voice was frightfully calm. And there's no way to read what he's thinking. While gazing at the house in raging flames, he continued speaking.
Okita: I've been thinking, maybe Serizawa-san is pretty much like me.
Ryu: Huh?
Okita: I think Serizawa-san understands himself very well. He looks at himself, and everything around him, with detachment.
Ryu: ... Perhaps.
Okita: He does. That's how I see it. For example, obviously when doing things in Hijikata-san's way, everything will run smoothly, and he will earn people's trust. However, even knowing so, after thinking over, there's no other way he can do it... So this is the outcome.
Acting in a perturbing manner, while knowing everything. Okita was the same with Serizawa from this perspective.
Hidden beneath his light words, he's talking about himself, criticizing himself with a clear mind.
Okita: What a hindrance.
Ryu: Huh?
Okita: I mean Serizawa-san. I knew he'd become a hindrance to Kondou-san someday. Hijikata-san, Sannan-san, and I of course, all think this way. He is nothing but harm to Kondou-san.
Standing there with wild flame on his back, Okita seemed like an ominous creature. Ryu gulped subconsciously and asked.
Ryu: If... If that's the case, what will become of him?
What Ryu was really trying to ask was, "what will you do?"
Okita: ... Who knows?
Okita shrugged lightly, and walked toward Hijikata and others.
Ryu froze. When Okita left, he's clearly smiling, hinting that Serizawa will be killed before long, very likely by Okita himself.
Personal comments:
1) Saitou really has a way with words. Knowing Souji felt competitive towards him, after he finished off Souji's prey, he's basically saying, "You could've done it yourself. It's just not your day. No hard feelings." XD
He also noticed something wrong with Souji and wanted them back ASAP. Even though he did need help with moving the body, he'd rather ask Shinpachi and Sano.
2) The first time I played, I was as surprised as Ryu was. Sannan was like a Santa Claus answering all Souji's wishes.
"Nothing else I can do except for becoming a sword"? -> "Okita-kun is the sword of Roshigumi."
"Want to be useful to Kondou-san"? -> "This sword is essential for pushing Kondou-san up."
"Will killing him make Kondou-san sad"? Follow our orders and you'll be fine! "I believe you can cut it off."
Great! All problems solved! Now do you want to become useful to Kondou-san? Or stay as a harmless kid brother to make Kondou-san happy but "isn't needed"?
Sannan-san shoved Okita onto the path of carnage just like that! He's so manipulative that it gave me the creeps. I love this character.
3) The part that surprised me most though, was when Souji talked so calmly in front of the flames at Yamatoya. In previous chapters, he expressed his anxiety and anger right away. Now he's analyzing himself, and saying these hateful words, yet he's cold and calm like it's none of his business. I shuddered when hearing he say "I am. How could I not be?" so coldly. He has grown and learned to hide his feelings well, so much that it's scary.
