okay so the episode starts with a shot of two non-Mosby children and future Robin's voice talking about "how i met your father", and then cuts to Robin telling Barney she's pregnant and it has to be his because she hasn't slept with the guy she's dating. So they go to the doctor and find out she's not actually pregnant, and then later Robin gets a call from the doctor to come back in, they found something else -- it turns out she can't get pregnant at all. The whole time Robin is reiterating how she never wants kids, but the show/narration keeps cutting to future Robin apologizing to her future children [who are made very clear to be Barney's] so it seems like something else will happen to give Robin and Barney kids. Robin is upset about losing the option to have children, but doesn't tell anyone because she knows they'd all overreact trying to make her feel better, so instead she explains her mood with a metaphor that nobody figures out. Ted still feels the need to cheer her up so he invites her to Christmas with his family which he' ( ... )

It was so good tonight. And, oh man, I kind of wanted Ted and Robin to kiss at the end, but I was glad they didn't because it wasn't about that. It would have gotten in the way of a beautiful moment.

I WANTED THEM TO KISS TOO and it kind of looked like they might, but yeah, it wasn't about that and it was a great friendship moment on its own. ;______;

Seeing as the last episode of HIMYM i watched was the one with Marshall finding out about his dad's death, it makes it seem like this show is all gutpunching endings now. agghhh

i suppose in retrospect it was a very effective rug-pulling to mimic Robin's emotions of thinking she was pregnant/discovering it wasn't possible.

I didn't even realize that, but I think you're right! I was too wrapped up in feeling too many emotions of like, being jerked around, but also Ted was amazing and Marshall would ask a lot of questions and what WAS that episode.

Thinking about it now that all the jerking around is done, i do like that they explored Robin's feelings so much and diverged so hugely from a conventional "surprise! she's pregnant" storyline, and even though the framing device was specifically designed to be A MISLEADING JERK the end note was still really nicely done. So i think i can appreciate it more without wondering what the hell is going on, but i dunno if that means it was successful or unsuccessful.
