okay so the episode starts with a shot of two non-Mosby children and future Robin's voice talking about "how i met your father", and then cuts to Robin telling Barney she's pregnant and it has to be his because she hasn't slept with the guy she's dating. So they go to the doctor and find out she's not actually pregnant, and then later Robin gets a call from the doctor to come back in, they found something else -- it turns out she can't get pregnant at all. The whole time Robin is reiterating how she never wants kids, but the show/narration keeps cutting to future Robin apologizing to her future children [who are made very clear to be Barney's] so it seems like something else will happen to give Robin and Barney kids. Robin is upset about losing the option to have children, but doesn't tell anyone because she knows they'd all overreact trying to make her feel better, so instead she explains her mood with a metaphor that nobody figures out. Ted still feels the need to cheer her up so he invites her to Christmas with his family which he's about to leave for, but Robin declines and instead spends the evening alone and it's revealed that the future kids were all in her imagination, it was just her coping with losing that possible path in her life. When she goes back to the apartment, she turns on the lights to discover a Christmas light show set up (similar to what Marshall had been working on at his house for the whole episode) and Ted comes out of the kitchen. Future Ted starts narrating again, saying that Robin never has kids and goes on to be super successful but most of all "she's never alone", while present Robin cries and Ted hugs her and kisses her forehead and it's amazing and here it is in gif form for you to enjoy
