Keenser banged his wrench for the eighth time, on the fifth straight panel for tenth straight hour, and still couldn't occupy his mind enough to forget that basically half the ship was currently incapacitated. It disconcerted him, not knowing how any of them had become stuck in a permanent state of sleep, and he hated not knowing how something happened. He couldn't even imagine how Scotty must be feeling with Liz stuck in medical, but it was probably something akin to how he felt seeing Marla stuck on the med bed barely moving.

Getting fed up with himself he threw his wrench somewhere in the direction of his toolkit and stood up, dusting his uniform off from imaginary dirt. He caught sight of Scotty wandering closer and gave the engineer a small nod, gesturing him closer, recognizing the look on his face. 'Face get stuck.' The best way he'd found to get through the engineer's more melancholic moods was to take his mind off of it, and what better way then to playfully insult him.

Scotty nodded in return, trying his best to keep from looking too much like a man who'd lost an essential part of his life, but judging by Keenser's comment about his face, he wasn't doing a good job of it. He sighed, and gave up the pretense of working, because right now, even if he worked his fingers to the bone, it wasn't going to fix the ship, and it certainly wasn't going to bring Liz back.

Keenser's playful insult might have worked any other time, but he was exhausted from lack of sleep and run ragged from trying to keep himself occupied, and the little alien's remark earned only something that bore a passing resemblance to a fatalistic chuckle.

Sanjay was the opposite of Mr. Scott. While Scotty was shoved out of Medical and threatened action against him if he came back, Sanjay was so distraught over Charlene's coma-like nature, he more or less refused to leave the engine room. Although some might be confused by this, he was reverting back to something familiar to him and trying to take his mind off this puzzle.

When Scotty came around to where he was, Sanjay was sitting on the floor in the middle of piles of PADDs surrounding him. With a panicked, and obviously sleep deprived face, he looked up to the chief engineer, "I-I CAN'T DO THIS BY MYSELF!" He held up a PADD, "What does this readout even mean?" A good 50-60% of the engineering crew had been affected by whatever this anomaly was, leaving the engine being supervised by an overworked skeleton crew, and most of them ensigns.

After he'd been forcibly ejected from Medical, Scotty had taken refuge in the engine room as well, and he was every bit as overworked and sleep-deprived as the rest of his crew. His rationalization for it was that since they were severely understaffed, it was up to him to keep morale up and to let his crew know that no matter what, he was right there with them, trying to work through this just like the rest of them. For his crew's sake, he was trying desperately to keep a good face on things, because sometimes, personal wasn't the same as important ( ... )

Sanjay blinked. "What do you mean 'what's this suppose to be'?" He didn't normally work with the electrical network of the engine, so he wasn't entirely comfortable trying to interpret data with such limited experience. Sanjay should've just stuck with the repairs and pressure systems...

"It's the data for the computer and electrical output. I-is there something wrong?" He tried to sit up and look to see what the chief engineer was doing. "Oh God, something's wrong isn't it?" He groaned and rubbed his face with the palms of his hands. "Unnnggghhh! I can't do all this by myself!"

Glancing up from the PADD, Scotty realized that he'd have to take a different approach here. Singh was clearly reaching the end of his rope, but there was no way Scotty could afford to cut him loose, even for a few hours. He needed every engineer who was still awake, and he needed them to focus, in spite of the fact that all of them were being run ragged. "Ensign," he said evenly, squatting down next to Singh, "Look at me, Ensign." He waited until Singh looked at him, and continued, "Why are you tryin' tae do all this yourself?"

He knew that Singh didn't have enough experience in electrical engineering to be looking over these readouts. He'd picked up a bit himself, but only because being the head of the entire engineering department aboard the ship meant all aspects of engineering, and not just mechanical, which was his own specialty. Even so, there was a reason he had someone working under him whose job it was to oversee the electrical engineering. Unfortunately for him and Singh, the officer in charge of electrical was ( ... )

It was a few weeks into her new assignment on the Enterprise that she'd discovered the junction under the heat exchangers. It was the perfect place for a little sit down when there was a lull in a long shift; the pipes curved around in an upright U-shape, radiating warmth and the low whisper of rushing fluid as they cradled a weary engineer ( ... )

The further into the engineering deck Scotty got, the more aware of just how quiet it was he became. With a good chunk of his staff missing, and everyone running themselves ragged, the general overall state of the remaining crew was exhaustion. That, combined with the sluggishness of the engine, and everything seemed almost muted, somehow. It was almost as bad as the complete silence left behind after the attack that had forced the ship to dock at Risa. Almost.

Lost in his own little world, Scotty almost didn't see Lynch as he walked past. In fact, he only noticed her because he had to stop and look up from his PADD, because his eyes seemed to be rebelling and didn't seem to want to focus. "Miss Lynch." He returned his attention to the PADD, giving Lynch enough time to wake up and come up with an acceptable excuse for not-quite-sleeping on the job.

Fran nearly fell off her seat as she jerked awake at the sound of her name. She looked frantically around in bleary-eyed panic for a moment before she caught sight of the chief and relaxed minutely. "Sir," she acknowledged, looking speculatively at the floor and contemplating the likelihood of passing out from the headrush if she attempted to stand up. She wasn't sure how long she'd been dozing for, but to judge by the way her skull felt like it was lined with cotton wool, not long enough to make much of a difference. "Any improvement yet?" she asked, taking a work-related question as an acceptable substitute in lieu of demonstrating to ability to stand upright.

"Nothin' yet," he replied, shaking his head, taking a moment to look through the schedules. As he'd suspected, Lynch was supposed to have left engineering hours ago, and while he appreciated his people's willingness to completely disregard the ends of their shifts, when it came down to catching a few minutes' sleep tucked away in a corner of the engine room, it was time to call it a day. "How long since you've had a break?" Too long, he knew that much already. There was nothing for it but ordering her to go and get some rest.
