spud for a day

I got a chance at the last minute to attend Street Scene this weekend. I did a quick check online and discovered that Devo was headlining on Saturday night, so the decision was pretty much foregone. I had never seen them live before, but it seems they are sticking with the classics. ( Read on, spuds and spudettes )

Shirts and shorts I dig, but where do the knee pads figure?

Unfortunately, there were some song titles that eluded me:
Something that included the repeated line "down below"
The one that starts "yeah yeah yeah yeah yayayayayaya!"
Immediately after "Freedom of Choice," they either started a new song that insists you "gotta love freedom," or they paused and offered an ending that I hadn't heard before.
An opening that sounded like "Beautiful World," but never resolved into anything familiar.

When Devo is on the radio, I must listen. My old roommate had a few albums on his 200-CD changer, and I had to stop whatever I was doing when the shuffle turned one up. Yet I never bought a Devo album myself. This has got to change.

The one that begins "yeah, yeah, yeah..." is Uncontrollable Urge. The others are unfamiliar to me.

The knee pads are part of the shorts uniform.

Did they show any of their videos?

I saw Devo back in '79. An exciting show!

They didn't show any music videos as such, but they did play an introduction narrated by a dignified old man in a smoking jacket. "So, you've decided to see a Devo show. An excellent choice. First, how to dress. Fortunately, all manners of dress are appropriate. The hippie ... the punk rocker ... the preppie. Try to maintain a respectful distance; you don't want to get burned by a spud or spudette smoking a cigarette." Of course, the cigarette scene was illustrated by two dozen Mr. Potato Heads, including one who bumps into someone's lit ciggie.
