Vacation was just....great. Even with long flights, an interminable amount of time spent in Detroit, occasional rainy weather, and the occasional minor injury, we had an extreme amount of fun

They were the dunes in Wilderness State Park by Cross Village.

Funny that you mention the bit about happy places - this particular lake is my happy place, too.
