T’Ani sat in silence, feeling numb. If all of her people endured all that she had over the past several years, she could now understand how they could be so emotionless and cold.
Katherine looked to her daughter, concern shining in her eyes. “T’Ani, are you all right, sweetheart?”
T’Ani slowly nodded as she responded, “Of course, mother.”
Katherine reached out and lifted her daughter’s chin so that their eyes met. “I know you T, and I know that you’ve never been able to lie to me either. Talk to me.”
T’Ani looked away and stood to her feet. Her voice broke as she replied, “I am sorry, Mother. I need some time alone right now.”
Katherine sighed aloud, knowing that T’Ani was not going to give in at this time. She smiled, “Very well.”
T’Ani walked out to the edge of the city by instinct and upon realizing where she had ended up, she could no longer control the tears that now fell freely. Drained, she dropped to her knees and wept openly onto the very soil that she and Syrek had spent so much time together during their courtship.
Hot wind caressed her face as she cried out, “What have I done to have all those I love taken away from me?”
She then caught a glimpse of the ring that had symbolized the union between her and her now late husband. “Oh, Syrek, I am so sorry. I tried to warn you that loving me would only cause you grief. Now you are gone and too many things were left unspoken.”
It seemed as if time had passed so slowly lately, and yet in reality, she did not really know how many days had gone by since she was told the news.
She and Syrek had been happily chatting as they made dinner together. Tonight was the night that T’Ani had chosen to share her wonderful news with her husband! Their world was soon about to change and she was sure that they would only be happier than they had ever been.
The two were interrupted by a light rapping on the door. Syrek dried off his hands and smiled, “I’ll get it.”
T’Ani continued working on their meal and a few moments later, he returned, but looked concerned. She turned and asked, “What is it? What’s happened?”
He smiled reassuringly and pulled her to him. He sweetly kissed the top of her head, as was his custom and sighed, “It is nothing to worry yourself over. However, I am needed at the Temple for a short period of time. I should be back before dinner is ready. Are you alright with that?”
She smiled up at him and nodded, “Just as long as you don’t let them talk you into staying for longer. I have a surprise for you.”
He grinned, his face lighting up, “A surprise? Now you know I will return on time. I can’t resist surprises, especially from you.”
He embraced her once more with the promise of his swift return and was gone. A little while later, T’Ani had been happily humming as she set the table when she’d shattered a glass on the floor. Sudden piercing pain in her head had ambushed her and as she closed her eyes to try and get her bearings, she found that she could barely stand.
She felt Syrek reaching out to her with a force so strong it was almost overwhelming and then with the same intensity…she felt a sudden emptiness. Her head throbbed as she forced herself to stand upright and make her way to the door.
Almost blindly, she made her way to the Temple. She had to find Syrek and figure out what was happening. Why had he called her so strongly, only to pull away from her completely? Something was amiss and whatever it was had her nearly paralyzed with pain.
When she rounded the corner, she stopped in horror. Before her lay the ruins of the Temple, pieces of the building were strewn for miles. People were screaming and the scent of burnt flesh was in the air. What was left of the furnishings that had been inside the Temple was roaring aflame. She began to slowly…numbly…make her way through the rubble. People looked at her as she walked by and some tried to stop her from getting any closer, but she ignored everything except the place where Syrek should have been.
There was nothing there, nothing left except debris from the structure that stood here merely ten minutes ago. Weakly, she called out to her husband. With utter disregard, she began moving large pieces of wood and anything else that stood in her way. After a few moments, her search became more frantic and she only stopped when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
She turned, hoping beyond all that it was Syrek, but it was her father. She stood looking at him helplessly for a few moments before he took her hands into his. “You are burned badly and have suffered several other injuries. We need to get you taken care of.”
For the first time then, she seemed to notice the pain she’d been unknowingly inflicting upon herself. Tears welled up in her eyes as she quietly uttered, “I have to find him. He’s here.”
Sitok gently, yet firmly stated, “T’Ani, he is not here. You know it deep inside…you can feel it. Your connection to him was broken, was it not?”
T’Ani shook her head, “No…he’s here. I just have to find him…I just need more time.”
Sitok sighed, “I cannot allow that. It has been confirmed that he was among those within the Temple when the explosion occurred. I know you do not want to hear this, but you must face the truth and stop risking your own health and safety.”
She started to protest but was cut off when he dropped something into her damaged hand. She looked down at it and felt her world beginning to spin out of control. Her breath stopped and Sitok had to reach out and steady her as seeing her husband’s melted and mangled ring lying there in her hand brought reality to her finally.
He was gone…her Syrek was…dead. The life that she had worked so hard to begin rebuilding had crumbled with the Temple that day and it would be many years before she could begin to heal.
