A friend of mine who has little kids was describing the difficulties she has when her children need to use public restrooms. Apparently, they are both utterly terrified of automatic flush toilets

Oddly enough, automatic flush toilets rarely startle me. Toasters, telephones, hiccoughs, well, these all make me jump out of my skin.

Oh, and I pity the poor superindentant at your last building who stepped into that danger area by suggesting you didn't flush the toilet "right"!
