Dear lord, you hit several of my guilty-angsty-pleasure buttons with this. ;__;
He told Cloud as much one drunken evening and woke up in a mass of agony the next day. It occurred to him later that maybe Cloud wasn’t the best person for that.

Going back through some of the fic I missed.
It makes sense, somehow, that Reno would be the one to see it. And that he'd be Cloud's drinking partner--all empty chatter and 'whatever' and knowing how not to poke at the stuff that's important.
And it's fascinating that he'd hold onto it. I wonder whether Cloud would appreciate company on that particular lonely vigil or not. It's Reno, so maybe he wouldn't mind so much, but then again it might get Reno stabbed.
It's always one of the things I've loved, though, that Cloud lived and died in this window of his life that no one is left to know about, and it haunts him in (very literal) ways that none of the others will ever understand. But a part of me has a thing for that one other person who kind of gets it but never says anything. After all, what's the point of talking about something that's over, but will never let you go?

*coughs* I might be squeeing over both the comment and the icon. Just so you know.

:D It seemed thematically appropriate.
I've always wanted to write something that captured that feeling, but it underlies everything you write for this fandom.
Now that I think of it, even USE is steeped in it, in its way. The guys all try to get on with their lives, but there's this recurring sense of thwarted destiny encroaching on their protective little bubble. And as I think about the plot, I realize that between Sephiroth and JENOVA and Hojo's leavings, this is how extreme things would need to get even for the hope of escaping the gravitational pull of that nightmare.
Are you the one who had the lit-map laid out of your AU and the three different futures that could evolve from it? I recall 'good ending,' 'moderately good ending,' and 'bad ending'--and at that, bad ending wasn't quite as bad as what actually happened in canon.

I'm sorry, I laughed.

Seriously, you have no idea how much that bothers me. Don't even get me started on Advent Children. And Tifa. Yeah. Tifa? You're not helping. Bah.
