It's 2003. Outkast is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. New terms coined include: binge-watch, dad bod, eggcorn, flash mob, level up, manscaping, muffin top, SARS, Skype, and unfriend.
For 2003 I read five fics: two Professionals and three Man from U.N.C.L.E..

I'm really way behind reading your Bingo-Posts or commenting on them. But I'll start now and will go backwards because I saw that I don't know all Pros stories you recommended. And I would love to read them. Time was against me for the last months.
And I never heard of the song you mentioned.

I hope you will find an opportunity to read some of the stories. There have been some good ones lately.
I had never heard of this song, either, but the resources I am using to make up for my limited knowledge of this era’s music identified it as one of the most recognizable songs of 2003.

My song for this year is this one
I like it and can't say why.

For some reason your post pinged in my inbox and I wanted to say this (along with thanks for the kind words):
This is a "you're not a good enough actor" fic, in which one partner is sent undercover without the other's knowledge because the other must be seen to believe their cover story and someone thinks only a genuine response will be convincing. I've read quite a few fics that use this trope, and all of them have been excellent. I don't find the trope very plausible, however.
I 100% AGREE. I had SUCH a hard time writing this story and never felt that the whole "fooled my partner" thing was at all plausible. I guess if you squint and are forgiving, it works, but I completely agree that it is really hard (at least for me) to do that scenario plausibly.

You got a notification because I created a link to your profile where I mentioned your name.
Interesting that you agree about the "you aren't a good enough liar" trope. I guess you also agree with me, though, that it's justified by a good story, since you wrote one. I actually have four fics that use it in my collection of favorites, including yours.

There are aspects of the story I like a lot, but I can't really examine that particular aspect without some cringing. I tried hard to make it work, but I never bought into it. It's not the only time that's happened in one of my stories, where no matter how hard I try I, at least, can still smell the desperation and duct tape holding it together. 😉

Incidentally, why is Small Distances at Chrome and Gunmetal but not on AO3?
