Reports of Tin Man fandom's death may be greatly... self-fulfilling

Jul 28, 2008 22:32

A few months ago, I was forced by circumstances to take a break from LJ and fandom. At the time of my leaving, it appeared to me that the Tin Man fandom was in reasonably good health, with a steady stream of new fic and new installments to WIPs, and new comms being created ( Read more... )

Ouch...my toes have been sufficiently stepped upon. Thanks for the insight, Blade.

Oh, I didn't mean to step on toes, and certainly not to single anyone out. Just thought it would be good to give a different perspective. You're not the only comm owner I've seen talking of quitting. But why not let it revert to a plus account rather than paid? Then we can all go and read what's there. :)

The subscription isn't up until either February or March. I really think that the real culprit is the season.

And I didn't think you were singling anyone out. I do appreciate the perspective. =)

You're quite welcome. I have every intention of continuing my own WIP, as well.

I consider it an offshoot of a fandom that is over a century old and quietly continues to this day. Wicked still continues to generate fanfic, as do the classic Oz books and movie adaptations.

I came into it as an old-school Baum nut. I've seen a lot of crappy Oz adaptations. This one had flaws galore and tons of plot holes...but the spirit was there. I could tell that Long-Mitchell & Van Sickle had read those books and were shooting more for those than the 1939 movie (which had its charms, but was WAY off the mark).

And when the Gray Gale showed up, it all fell into place. That totally cinched it for me. This was not meant to look like Oz. It WAS Oz. This wasn't just a standard adaptation, it was "Encounter at Farpoint" for Baum readers.

That being said, I very much wish Sci-Fi Channel could make a series of it, just as the writers were intending. I'm so tired of pessimistic, dreary material with sociopathic lead characters, "reality shows" that pander to our feelings of superiority, and the parade of cop shows.

One of the things that particularly appealed to me about Baum's Oz, even as a child (when I was introduced to it), was the capacity of the world to support other stories and other ideas within it.

Much like Tolkien's mythology, whether their authors supported it or no, they created worlds that became breeding grounds for children's imaginations. I still think often of Oz and of Middle-earth as an adult, and judging by the amount of people still writing (sometimes, as in TM, officially sanctioned) stories about them, so do a lot of others.

I love the fact that Oz can support Elphaba, and Ozma, and DG, and A Barnestormer in Oz (there's a few hours I wish I could have back), and Was, and thousands of (often wack) fanfic stories/extrapolations, and thousands of poems and songs ( ... )

COOL! Always great to find folks who read the books. I was that bookish kid with some severe emotional issues growing up, and my nose was always in some book, looking for some world where I could fit in. I think I'm still looking for it.
