Reports of Tin Man fandom's death may be greatly... self-fulfilling

One of the things that particularly appealed to me about Baum's Oz, even as a child (when I was introduced to it), was the capacity of the world to support other stories and other ideas within it.

Much like Tolkien's mythology, whether their authors supported it or no, they created worlds that became breeding grounds for children's imaginations. I still think often of Oz and of Middle-earth as an adult, and judging by the amount of people still writing (sometimes, as in TM, officially sanctioned) stories about them, so do a lot of others.

I love the fact that Oz can support Elphaba, and Ozma, and DG, and A Barnestormer in Oz (there's a few hours I wish I could have back), and Was, and thousands of (often wack) fanfic stories/extrapolations, and thousands of poems and songs.

When I was little (okay, *really* little), I used to think the Oz books were written about me, because I was an ordinary little girl stuck in an adult's world where adults didn't have much time for me, and I was always dreaming of being somewhere else. It makes me feel more connected to know that other people felt, and feel, the same way.

COOL! Always great to find folks who read the books. I was that bookish kid with some severe emotional issues growing up, and my nose was always in some book, looking for some world where I could fit in. I think I'm still looking for it.
